LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 15 months of the Education Review Office and Mangapapa School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Mangapapa School is located in Gisborne and provides education for learners in years 1 to 6. The vision is Toro atu ki ngā whetū kia taumata I te maurea kāore he mutunga ot te kimi mātauranga / At Mangapapa school we REACH for the stars where learning has no limits. The REACH values: respect, excellence, attitude, community and have a heart underpin teaching and learning.
Mangapapa School’s strategic drivers for improving outcomes for learners are:
-
whanaungatanga – feeling connected. A sense of place and identity
-
arohaina te Kaupapa – loving learning. Fostering a love of learning within every learner
-
whakapuāwai – opportunities to shine. Providing a whole child focused curriculum and culture.
A copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan can be requested from Mangapapa school.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school’s transition approach and curriculum supports learners, particularly those most at risk, to develop the foundation skills and dispositions required to enable them to be a successful learner.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
-
in 2020 a review of the curriculum identified the need to better assess and understand learners as they transition, to help focus teaching and provide appropriate support more accurately
-
a range of initiatives that promote purposeful play have been implemented to develop foundation skills and dispositions
-
insights from this evaluation will inform ongoing development of the localised curriculum to ensure it is responsive to the needs of learners.
The school expects to see a localised curriculum that promotes the development of foundation skills and dispositions to enable learners to successfully access the broader curriculum and ensure equitable outcomes for all.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support it in its goal to ensure that learners are able to develop the foundation skills and dispositions to access the broader curriculum and become successful learners:
-
leaders demonstrate a clear understanding and facilitation of their roles and responsibilities. Decision making is aligned to resourcing to achieve the school priorities
-
leadership is continually adapting implementation and strategy to deliver on the school’s priorities
-
a positive and inclusive school culture that builds and sustains relational trust, collective efficacy and teacher agency.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
-
continued use of school entry assessment data to refine a needs-based programme focused on embedding foundation skills and learning dispositions
-
aligning dispositions for learning and learner assets and identify how these will translate into relevant, challenging, and meaningful learning activities across all year levels
-
closer monitoring and regular evaluation and reporting against key drivers to better know the impact of actions on improving learner outcomes with a clear focus on equity and excellence.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
