Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 10 months of the Education Review Office and Reignier Catholic School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Reignier Catholic School, in the Napier suburb of Greenmeadows, has children in Years 1 to 6. The special Catholic character is upheld through the core beliefs and values of, respect – manaakitanga, community - hapori and service – ratonga.

Reignier Catholic School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to encounter and witness Christ through authentic Catholic education
  • to reach their highest potential, to fully participate and work towards being active members of their community
  • to foster and grow a sense of personal identity and belonging as a child of Christ.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Reignier Catholic School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the extent to which teacher professional development in adaptive and responsive practices results in improved progress and achievement outcomes for all learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • to understand and respond to the diverse needs of learners through adaptive teaching practice that remove barriers to learning, resulting in improved student outcomes
  • the introduction of new curriculums requires review and adaptation of teaching practices and delivery.

The school expects to see:

  • responsive teaching practice that adapts to meet the needs of students to support equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners
  • assessment practices used by staff to inform teaching and learning programmes.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to respond to diverse learning needs through adaptive and responsive practice:

  • a shared sense of purpose and identity that unites students, staff and the school community in collaborative and trustful relationships
  • students participate and learn in a caring, and inclusive learning community
  • a culture of continual improvement builds teacher capacity and encourages challenging and appropriate expectations for student learning.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • reviewing assessment for learning practices and principles to ensure the best possible information is gathered, analysed and used
  • professional learning to further build staff capability in implementing responsive and adaptive teaching
  • on-going review of the localised curriculum and its delivery to ensure it meets the needs of students and school community through an authentic Catholic lens
  • continued inquiry into student progress supported by professional dialogue to share good practice.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
