LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 18 months of the Education Review Office and Rangitoto College working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Rangitoto College is a large co-educational secondary school that caters for students from Years 9 – 13. The College’s values are pride, respect, integrity, courage, and excellence. The college had recently formed an Engagement and Development Programme partnership with Te Kawerau a Maki.
Rangitoto College’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- empowering great student outcomes through the provision of quality teaching and learning programmes
- providing support to develop exceptional outcomes for our people
- creating opportunities for students to make a positive difference in our community
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Rangitoto College’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the authentic integration of Matauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) into the Rangitoto College curriculum to support the schools ongoing commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and ensuring excellent and equitable outcomes for all students.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
-
to develop and strengthen Rangitoto whakawhanaungatanga and bi-cultural practice
-
enhance the local and the knowledge rich curriculum through connection with iwi, hapū and whānau.
The school expects to see strategically planned developments to support the strengthening of tikanga Māori and use of te reo Māori across the school and the development of schoolwide resources. The school wants to ensure that their programmes authentically integrate Matauranga Māori in, and through the curriculum.
Students’ knowledge and understanding of the local curriculum, developed through links with iwi, hapū and whānau will be enhanced. They will experience a local, authentic curriculum which will support them to develop their knowledge and understanding of te ao Māori and of New Zealand | Aotearoa as a bi-cultural nation.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to evaluate the authentic integration of Matauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) into the Rangitoto College curriculum:
-
highly effective and well-established leadership that prioritises school improvement and equitable and excellent outcomes for all students

a purposeful, and respectful school culture and learning climate that supports the wellbeing and achievement of students
-
effective teaching and learning that is focused on providing students with a meaningful, relevant, and challenging curriculum
-
a collaborative professional learning community who engages with evidence led research and professional learning.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
-
developing a Rangitoto kawa resource with te reo Māori and tikanga Māori
-
utilising baseline data on current local content and knowledge in the curriculum
-
the establishment of a whānau guiding group
-
developing Rangitoto Matauranga Māori model using Ka Hikitia
-
establishing a strong reciprocal relationship with Te Kawerau a Maki.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
