Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Levin Intermediate working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Levin Intermediate, located in Levin, caters for learners in year 7 and 8. The school provides bilingual education for students.

Levin Intermediate’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • raise student achievement

  • set expectations and guidelines to provide clarity around quality practice

  • support the growth and development of Māori language and tikanga in a safe and inclusive way

  • make strong connections with family, whānau, community and iwi.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Levin Intermediate’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well learners achieve successful outcomes through their two-year participation in the Levin Intermediate curriculum.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the school is seeking to evaluate the impact of their curriculum delivery on outcomes for learners over two years at intermediate.

The school expects to see

  • a positive trajectory of progress in literacy and mathematics for learners over their two years at intermediate

  • effective teaching and learning aligned to the school’s expectations

  • high levels of engagement for learners in a culturally responsive curriculum

  • reciprocal learning partnerships with parents, whānau, community and iwi.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to achieve equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners:

  • school conditions encourage the positive engagement of students in learning

  • collaborative and cohesive leadership promotes continuous improvement aligned to the school and community priorities

  • curriculum design and delivery value the funds of knowledge from stakeholders

  • an appropriate range of assessment tools are used to identify learners requiring their progress accelerated, and to track, monitor and report their progress.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • continued participation of teachers and support staff in professional learning and development and ongoing provision of coaching and mentoring to build capability in delivery of shared curriculum expectations

  • gathering of information from students, parents and whānau to inform evaluation insights into the impact of curriculum delivery and school practices on achieving the school’s strategic goals.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
