LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written with the Education Review Office and Maidstone Intermediate working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Maidstone Intermediate is situated in central Upper Hutt. It offers learning opportunities for students in Years 7 and 8.
Maidstone Intermediate’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:
- provide a safe and nurturing environment where all students succeed
- create a bi-cultural learning environment and celebrate cultural diversity
- provide an inclusive environment free from discrimination
- grow external partnerships to support children in their learning.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Maidstone Intermediate’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the impact of teaching strategies on improving outcomes for all learners, especially in reading, writing and mathematics.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- an ongoing need to raise the achievement of students, especially in reading, writing and mathematics
- to provide effective support for students with diverse learning needs, prioritising increasing their sense of belonging
- establishing and maintaining consistent expectations across learning environments for teaching and behaviour.
The school expects to see:
- improved teaching practice that leads to inclusive and positive learning environments
- learners experiencing success, actively engaged in learning and increased achievement in reading, writing and mathematics.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to evaluate the impact of teaching strategies on improving outcomes for all learners, especially in reading, writing and mathematics.
- students engage and succeed in a wide range of opportunities that increase curiousity, interests and new areas of learning
- te reo and tikanga Māori has been strengthened across the school.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- teachers identifying, sharing and using those strategies that have most impact on improving progress and achievement, especially reading, writing and mathematics
- increased provision of responsive and targeted support for students with identified learning needs
- strengthening tracking and monitoring of the progress for all learners to inform targeted teaching
- maintaining pastoral actions to support learner outcomes and well being
- strengthening whānau understanding of learning processes so they can better support the learning of their tamariki.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
