LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Masterton Intermediate working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Masterton Intermediate is situated in Masterton, Central Wairarapa and educates learners in Years 7 and 8. The adjacent school farm provides additional, unique learning opportunities.
Masterton Intermediate’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
-
develop strong relationships and networks, be an inclusive kura, embrace and celebrate diversity
-
initiate programmes that support social and emotional well-being for all – kindness and happiness
-
respond strongly to the needs of ākonga in te reo and tikanga Māori
-
offer a wide range of learning opportunities that inspire students to be the best they can be.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Masterton Intermediate’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the impact of revised strategies for the teaching of reading across the school.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
-
improve student outcomes in reading
-
enhance the ability of all students to access and succeed across the wider curriculum.
The school expects to see increased engagement and achievement in reading. It also expects improved reading capability to allow students to better access all areas of the local curriculum.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to improve student outcomes in reading.
-
A wide range of curriculum opportunities offered by staff, including teachers and learning assistants, that offer students multiple avenues to engage in learning and to succeed.
-
Dedicated leaders who are committed to ongoing improvement to teacher practices and students’ outcomes.
-
Strong, culturally responsive practices that demonstrate and value Māori and Pacific cultures.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
-
improving teacher practice in delivering highly effective strategies in reading to better enable students to engage in the school’s local curriculum
-
refine the school’s unique local curriculum, including the histories curriculum, to increase student engagement and opportunities for success.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
