Background
This Profile Report was written within 18 months of the Education Review Office and Maungaraki School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Maungaraki School is located in Lower Hutt and provides education for students in Years 0 to 8.
Maungaraki School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- to provide a supportive environment that foster wellbeing for all
- that each student is enabled to achieve their best in all areas of the curriculum
- to provide engaging, innovative ways of learning through a balanced range of activities within a connected environment.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Maungaraki School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively teachers are supporting students to understand their next learning steps.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- the school’s focus on continuous improvement and their desire that all learners are engaged, motivated and have ownership of their learning journey.
- To assist staff to better understand and use internal evaluation for continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
The school expects to see resilient learners who respect themselves, others and the environment, who are strong and confident in their own identities, languages and cultures.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to evaluate how effectively teachers are supporting students to understand their next learning steps.
- a well-established plan that clarifies actions and provides indicators of success
- leadership that understands the need to continue to do more to improve outcomes for all learners
- school values that are well known and enacted to support the wellbeing of all learners.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- evaluating the impact of its strategic planning for developing student agency supported by clear curriculum progressions
- extending schoolwide knowledge of evaluation for improvement.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
