Context 

Rata Street School is a large state primary, contributing school, for year 1 to 6 learners, located in Naenae, Lower Hutt.

Rata Street School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • relationships are based on the school values of resilience, respect, inclusive, heart and teamwork

  • to grow capacity to value Te Ao Māori and supporting Māori to succeed as Māori

  • to actively seek ways to innovate and improve teaching practices and enhance learning experiences.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school is growing capacity to value te ao Māori and supporting Māori to succeed as Māori.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • strengthening the consistent practice and increasing capability across the school in te reo me ona tikanga Māori has been identified as a strategic priority

  • to ensure equitable outcomes in learning for all students.

The school expects to see improved and consistent teaching and learning practices in te ao Māori and a further strengthening of teachers’ capability and capacity to implement culturally responsive practices.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to evaluate how effectively the school is growing capacity to value te ao Māori and supporting Māori to succeed as Māori.

  • The school has a clear and well developed framework for teaching and learning through a te ao Māori lens that will support and strengthen practice in culturally responsive practices and improved outcomes for learners.

  • Strong community and whānau engagement which allows the school to gather and implement whānau aspirations.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • Professional learning development which focuses on supporting the development of strengthened practice in te reo me ona tikanga Māori.

  • Ensuring the te ao Māori framework is the vehicle to deliver the localised Aotearoa histories curriculum.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
