Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within twenty months of the Education Review Office and Roseneath working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Roseneath School is situated in Wellington and caters for students in Years 0 to 8.

Roseneath’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • empower all ākonga to be actively involved and striving in their learning

  • strengthen the systems, practices, and environments that promote positive behaviour for learning

  • enable ākonga, whānau and the wider community to participate in collaborative partnerships for learning

  • advance our collective understanding of Aotearoa’s bicultural heritage, and champion te reo me ona tikanga Māori as part of our everyday learning experience.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Roseneath’s website.

ERO and the school have been working together to evaluate the impact of championing te reo me ona tikanga Māori as part of everyday learning experiences for all ākonga, and to provide a culturally affirming learning environment for Māori students to flourish.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation was that the school wanted to ensure that development of its cultural responsiveness strategies, which it will continue to evolve over time, will support and grow students’ bicultural understanding and practices.

From the work already underway, the school expects to see:

  • increased schoolwide knowledge and use of te reo and tikanga Māori

  • a deeper understanding of the local area’s history and Aotearoa's unique identity

  • improved wellbeing outcomes for Māori students

  • Māori students’ culture, language, and identity are highly valued.

Strengths

The school can draw from an increased awareness of the importance of cultural understanding within its board, staff and community and the following strengths

  • high quality affirmative inquiry that informs continuous improvement

  • open communication with an engaged community.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will continue to prioritise:

  • empowering ākonga, whānau, teachers and the wider community to participate in collaborative partnerships for learning

  • actively engaging with Rōpu Whānau to share aspirations for learners

  • development of shared understandings of local historical narratives and incorporate these in teaching and learning programmes to advance collective understanding of Aotearoa’s bicultural heritage

  • championing te reo me ngā tikanga Māori as part of everyday learning experiences.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
