Context 

St Brigids School is a multicultural Catholic school located in Johnsonville, Wellington for students in Years 1 to 8.

St Brigids School (Johnsonville)’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

• to embed the St Brigids curriculum that provides students with rich learning opportunities and enhanced learning for all

• for teachers to sustain and improve consistency and collaboration in how they work together

• to build partnerships with local iwi to reinforce the school’s vision of learning together with strength of character and gentleness of heart.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the school is responding to the learning needs of its priority learners, those whose progress requires acceleration.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

• to enhance the performance of priority learners

• to clearly identify and cater for learners’ needs, and to monitor the effectiveness of interventions

• to develop teachers’ capacity to work collaboratively to ensure equity and personal excellence for all learners.

The school expects to see:

• all children engaged with and progressing in their learning

• accelerated progress over time for priority learners

• a culture of collaboration within and across teaching teams.

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to effectively meet the learning needs of priority learners:

• a connected, caring community where its values are well known and enacted for the wellbeing of all

• current data collection and tracking processes

• a senior leadership team who clearly articulate a collaborative team approach and expectations to support positive learning outcomes for all learners.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

• developing links with iwi and in particular mana whenua to strengthen the sense of identity of Māori learners, as well as broadening opportunities for students to learn, participate and understand Aotearoa New Zealand’s dual culture

• using achievement and progress data to evaluate the impact of teaching and learning interventions for learners

• collaboration within and across teaching teams, so that all learners have equitable opportunity for improved outcomes.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
