Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 15 months of the Education Review Office and Tinui School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Tinui School is located in rural Wairarapa and provides education for students in Years 1 to 8.

Tinui School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • Literacy – to improve oral and written communication skills and further develop reading comprehension skills.

  • Mathematics – to increase students’ knowledge in all mathematical areas.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Tinui School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the effectiveness of the school’s focus on improving writing.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • to accelerate the progress of those students identified as not meeting expectations in writing

  • to ensure the sustainability of gains made in literacy.

The school expects to see an increase in student understanding of the writing process and their confidence in identifying and working on their next learning steps in writing.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to improve student outcomes in writing:

  • assessment practices that clearly identify student achievement and needs

  • collaborative teachers who use their collective strengths to ensure students’ needs are met.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • building evaluation capability and capacity by developing a Tinui Evaluation Framework using the context of writing

  • making links between oral language, reading and writing to strengthen equitable and excellent outcomes for all students in literacy

  • implementing identified actions in literacy to achieve targets.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
