LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 10 months of the Education Review Office and Mairehau Primary School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Mairehau Primary caters for children from years 1 to 8 and is situated on the outskirts of the Christchurch central business district. The school values are Whaikoha, Whakapono, Wawata and Angitu – Respect, Believe, Aspire and Achieve.
Mairehau Primary School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- the school is a place of learning within a safe and inclusive environment
- having high aspirations for every learner while partnering with whānau.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Mairehau Primary School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to support teachers’ continuous improvement and capability in the teaching of writing, so that accelerated progress in literacy is accessible to all learners.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- the school is committed to ensuring that all learners gain foundation skills and make accelerated progress in writing
- learner’s progress in writing has not met schoolwide aspirations.
The school expects to see:
- a greater number of students achieving and making accelerated progress in writing
- continuous improvement in teacher’s capability to reflect on and utilise responsive practices in literacy.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support teachers’ continuous improvement and capability in the teaching of writing, so that accelerated progress in literacy is accessible to all learners:
- an inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement
- teacher’s open to learning dispositions which will build on the current literacy practices at the school
- a Board of Trustees which is willing to invest resources in ensuring best outcomes for learners.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- learners having ownership and agency in their learning to promote progress across writing
- ensuring teacher’s Professional Growth Cycles link to effective practices in writing so that professional learning has immediate relevance
- strengthening partnerships with parents and whānau to promote shared aspirations for learners’ achievement
- a school wide focus in connecting improved literacy skills across other curriculum areas so that learners can make links between learning contexts.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
