Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 24 months of the Education Review Office and Rangiora Borough School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Rangiora Borough is a full primary school established in 1873, in central Rangiora for Year 1 to 8 students.

A special element of the school is Ngā Rākau e Rua, the bilingual unit. This unit providing whānau guided education for ākonga in Years 2 to 8. The focus is to develop strong bilingual language foundations in Māori and English within a bicultural environment.

The school’s vision is to provide pathways to lifelong learning through the development of the five school values of Manaakitanga (respect), Whanaungatanga (relationships), Kairangi (excellence), Hauora (wellbeing) and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship).

Rangiora Borough School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to have:

  • culturally empowered ākonga
  • literate ākonga
  • a healthy learning environment for all.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Rangiora Borough School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the school’s goal to culturally empower ākonga through effective schoolwide practices.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is that through a collaborative evaluation approach, ERO can provide valuable insights, feedback and recommendations to support the school in its continuous improvement journey.

The school expects to see:

  • ākonga and kaiako developing confidence to use te reo Māori to effectively communicate
  • ākonga empowered by agreed tikanga across the school
  • ākonga feel strengthened in their own cultural identity
  • ākonga and kaiako are empowered by strategies and practices that promote active learning and hauora.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the school goal to culturally empower ākonga

  • Cohesive collaborative school vision and strategic priorities that focus on continuous improvement for all students.
  • A positive and improvement focused school culture.
  • Strong leadership at all levels of the school.
  • Build on strategic evaluation processes already in place to support positive outcomes.
  • A well-informed and active school board that operates with a strong governance framework.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise continuing to:

  • focus on consolidating and embedding school values, strategic vision and direction
  • build a safe, inclusive vibrant learning environment so that all students achieve well and experience success.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
