Background
This Profile Report was written within twelve months of the Education Review Office and Mountainview High School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. Context
Mountainview High School is a state co-educational school located in Timaru and caters for students in Years 9 to 13.
Mountainview High School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:
- support expert pedagogical practices by developing a sustainable teaching and learning framework across the kura
- grow an inclusive school-wide culture that promotes individual success within a whānau environment.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively school systems and structures support the building of effective teaching practices.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- the strategic goals clearly outline the school's intent to raise student achievement through effective teaching
- school leadership has identified the need for teaching practices to consistently reflect best practice.
The school expects to see enhanced systems and structures such as school organisation, decision-making processes, performance management and communication supporting improvements in teaching practice and student achievement and engagement.

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to raise student through building effective teaching practice:
- A focus on wellbeing and providing an inclusive environment and culture.
- Culturally responsive practices guide teaching and learning.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- evaluating and strengthening school systems and processes to support teaching practice
- strengthening teaching practice that responds to students’ identified strengths, needs and prior learning and supports improved outcomes in achievement and engagement.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
