Visual Arts students explore, and communicate their own artistic ideas by responding to how art expresses identity, culture, ethnicity, ideas, feelings, moods, beliefs, political viewpoints, and personal perspectives. Through engaging in the visual arts, students, learn how to discern,  participate in, and celebrate their own and others' visual worlds.

L1 Drama

In Level 1 NCEA Drama, students engage in devising their own performances, studying Theatre Aotearoa, and performing in a scripted production. They work through units assessed using NCEA standards, with all internals requiring both live performances in front of an audience and a written account of their creative process.

The Level 1 English course includes 15 credits in total, with one assessment that is internally assessed and two that are external. For the internal assessment students will craft a piece of writing that demonstrates their ability to use stylistic and written conventions (5 credits) and is due in the middle of Term 3. Students complete the course with two external exams, consisting of a written response on a studied test (5 credits) and Unfamiliar Text (5 credits).

L1 Media Studies

L1 Media Studies at TGS explores the relationship between contexts, perspectives and media texts. Students learn how identities are shaped by media experiences and ways groups can be influenced by political and ideological media messages. Students also learn video production techniques and produce a short film to demonstrate their understanding. The course is internally assessed over two assessments which are each worth 5 credits.

This is a course with two internal standards and one external. 1.1 and 1.2 are portfolio assessments which focus on biophysical component, movement and strategies involved in movement. The external focuses on understanding movement in a New Zealand context.

The increased emphasis on creativity and individual choice provided by the general objectives and by the flexibility of design briefs have enabled a course to be designed which meets the needs of the students at this school. The level 1 course includes design briefs which are based on realistic and thought provoking situations. They are intended to encourage and challenge you to achieve your best. L2 Art History

Art History is the study of objects of art in their historical, stylistic and developmental contexts, ie genre, design, format, and style. This includes the major arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture.

This year we will survey the development of Western Art from a period when a great wave of social and political change swept Europe. The French and Industrial Revolutions had a profound effect upon society. Consequently, artists invented new forms of art in response, challenging traditional ideas. We will examine the major artistic styles of Rococo, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, and Post Impressionism.

L2 Biology

This is a 20 credit course assessed against Five Achievement Standards. Each standard will be recorded as Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit or Excellence. Two standards will be assessed internally and three by the external national examination in November. Due dates are subject to change and will be indicated when you are given the internal assessment.

L2 Business Studies

Students will be entered into two Level 2 Agribusiness standards and two Level 2 external Business Studies standards.

L2 Visual Arts - Design

Students create and promote their own imaginary Festival. The Design Process, typography, image and type combinations will all be explored in this process. Designers and artists will be used for inspiration where applicable. Drawing in its many forms (to research, clarify, extend and present ideas) will be emphasized. Tutorials will be available on Adobe Digital programmes such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

L2 Drama

In level 2 NCEA Drama students develop their acting skills by learning drama techniques and the Stanislavski method to perform a scripted scene. They explore classical theatre through a period piece of Shakespeare, take on a significant role in a full production, and devise a scene to realise a creative inention. A live viewing of Romeo and Juliet provides material for the external assessment, where students analyze and evaluate a professional performance.

L2 Economics

Students will be entered into 2 internal and 2 external L2 Economics standards.

These standards are not assessed in any other course.

L2 English

Level 2 English offers up to three internals, one optional. Students complete a film analysis standard, worth 3 credits, which is due at the end of Term 1.

The Level 2 Writing Portfolio is worth 6 credits. For this internal assessment, students will complete and submit two pieces of writing by the middle of Term 2. They also have the option to submit a crafted oral text (speech), worth an additional 3 credits. This standard is not compulsory. Students complete the course with two external exams, consisting of a Written Text Analysis (4 credits) and Unfamiliar Text (4 credits)

L2 English Literacy

This course offers 17 credits. Students will present a crafted selection of creative writing (6 credits) in their Writing Portfolio. They will also complete an information literacy study (4 credits) Students will also perform a close study of an extract of film they have studied in class (3 credits) In this course, there is one examination task, which involves writing an essay on a studied written (4 credits)

L2 French

Students do one internal and two externals. The internal assessment is a portfolio of interactions and will be completed by the end of term 3.

This is a construction based course with 14-25 credits available - all are Skills Standards where students will gain Achieved, Merit, or Excellence grades. Projects will be based around building construction and support the students in developing skills for use in the building industry.

Level 2 Technology Product Design

The course has been developed to follow on form and building upon the level 1 TPD course. The course requires students to design and develop a unique one-off product. Therefore the student is expected to solve problems in both the design and making processes.

Independent thinking and drive is crucial to success. Safe workshop behaviour is also paramount.

Level 2 Spatial Design

Level Two Spatial Design has internally assessed achievement standards offered through project work that are generated during the year. An externally assessed portfolio is submitted at the end of the year and comprises of curated evidence gathered throughout the whole year.

L3 Art History

Art History is the study of objects of art in their historical, developmental and stylistic contexts ie genre, design, format, and style. This includes the "major" arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture.

This year we will survey the development of Italian Renaissance art, from Giotto in the early fourteenth century, through to Piero della Francesca in the 1470's. We will study the sculptures of Donatello and the ground breaking architecture of Brunelleschi. We will examine the major artistic styles of the period including Italo-Byzantine and International Gothic, and review the influence classical antiquity. Northern Renaissance will be studied to provide comparison. The different materials used by artists to achieve specific effects are also studied.

L3 Biology

This is a 19 credit course assessed against the following Five Achievement Standards. Each standard will be recorded as Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit or Excellence. Two standards will be assessed internally and three by the exernal national examnination in November. Due dates are subject to change and will be indicated when you are given the internal assessment.

This course is all about turning business ideas into reality. Senior students will step into the shoes of an entrepreneur and business owner to learn how real companies start up.

Students will spend the year running a real business activity and solving business issues. A compulsory and central part of this course is participating in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES). Working in teams, students will set up and run a real business—creating a product or service, managing finances, and selling to the public. 

This course perfectly blends hands-on business experience throughout the year with two exams at the end. Students gain practical skills, independence, communication, teamwork, leadership and sharp thinking needed for university, business enterprise, or launching their own career.

By completing this course and competing in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), students gain a fully immersive real-world business experience. Participating in the Young Enterprise Scheme allows students the opportunity to pitch an idea to real judges and business people; manage cash flows, production budgets, and break-even points; market and sell a physical product/service to real customers. Through the team-based nature of the YES competition, students develop skills including problem-solving, collaboration, leadership, delegation and communication. Students learn how to view business through a modern New Zealand lens, understanding that business success is about balancing profit with people and the environment.

Because the YES component requires students to work in groups to run a company, it is essential that students enjoy working in groups and collaborating.

L3 Business Studies

This course offers a practical, real-world look at how modern commerce operates in New Zealand. Students will see how real New Zealand companies make big decisions, handle money, market products, and survive major global challenges. This course balances project work throughout the year with one exam at the end, helping students build the practical skills and sharp thinking needed for university, business, or starting their own career. Students will have the opportunity to work in pairs and small groups for some of the project work to develop communication, team work and leadership skills if they wish to do so.

Total course - 14 Level 3 credits.

Individualized design briefs will begin after the first assessment.

The course includes two Internal Assessment Standards (worth a total of 6 credits) both of which are compulsory. The 'Visual Text' internal (3 credits) is combined with the oral presentation (3 credits) and they are assessed simultaneously as a seminar early in Term 2. Students then sit two External Assessment Standards, worth 4 credits each: Studied Written Text and Studied Visual or Oral Text.

L3 English

The 13 ENI Course offers five Internal Assessments (worth a total of 19 credits) all compulsory. The 'Respond critically to a visual (3 credits) is combined with the oral presentation (3 credits) and they are assessed simultaneously as a seminar early in Term 2. Students will also complete a Writing Portfolio, worth 6 credits. The folio will include pieces of writing completed throughout the year, with the final submission for this assessment in Term 3. In addition, the course also includes a research assessment (4 credits) and the creation of a visual text (3 credits) There is no external assessment included in this course.

L3 French

Students do one internal and two externals. The internal assessment is a portfolio of interactions and will be completed by the end of term 3.

Using drawing to demonstrate understanding of conventions appropriate to painting; Systematically clarify ideas using drawing informed by established painting practice; Produce a systematic body of work that integrates conventions and regenerates ideas within in painting practice.

L3 Visual Arts - Photography

In Level 3 Photography, students extend their technical and conceptual understanding of photographic practice. They develop advanced skills using DSLR cameras alongside alternative photographic processes, exploring a range of techniques for capturing and constructing imagery.

Students work predominantly with digital photography, learning to manipulate and refine images using industry standard software such as Photoshop. Through this process, they generate, develop, and clarify ideas to produce a cohesive body of work.

Alongside practical work, students engage in written research, investigating established photographic artists to deepen their understanding of both traditional and contemporary practices. This research informs their own work, supporting the development of personal ideas and visual language.

Throughout the course, students are encouraged to think critically, experiment with materials and processes, and refine their work to communicate meaningful concepts and ideas within a sustained photographic project.

L3 Physical Education consists of 5 internal assessments completed throughout the year. Total course is worth 19 credits.

L3 Textile Design

16 credits are offered in this course. 12 Credits are Internal and 4 credits External. (optional)

Textile Design Technology involves a rich variety of learning experiences leading to a wide range of career opportunities. These may include but are not limited to: Fashion designer, pattern maker, cutter, stylist, buyer, retail management, sample machinist, interior designer, soft furnishings maker, product developer / designer, CAD machine technician, event management, fashion journalist, knitwear designer, sail maker, textile designer, smart textile development for medical use, costume designer, wardrobe assistant etc.

The increased emphasis on creativity and individual choice provided by the general objectives and by the flexibility of design briefs have enabled a course to be designed which  meets the needs of the students at this school. The level 3 course includes design briefs which are based on realistic and thought provoking situations. They are intended to encourage and challenge you to achieve your best. You will be expected to seek individual, innovative solutions in a variety of ways. Studying technology in this context develops your understanding, sharpens your perceptions of design, and creates awareness of the environment and of society's needs. In 2024 the emphasis is on Pattern drafting and Design. A portfolio of design work is required in spired by Architecture and students will draft a block and extend their pattern making skills.

L3 Tourism

All standards are internally assessed 

Standards 24733 and 23766 are optional standards

The total number of credits on offer is 38 

Students get 3 resubmission attempts if they do not pass the first time.

Level 3 Technology Building and Construction

This is a construction based course with 18 credits avaialble - all are Skills standards based where students will gain Achieved, Merit, or Excellence grades. The focus is on developing Building and Construction skills through a range of projects including building and furniture construction.

Level 3 Technology Product Design

This is a 16 internal credit course plus a 4 credit external. Some internal standards are optional in discussion with the classroom teacher. Students will be withdrawn from those standards they are not going to attempt later in the year. This is a University approved course for University Entrance.

level 3 Spatial Design

Level 3 Spatial Design has internally assessed achievement standards offered through project work that are generated during the year. An externally assessed portfolio is submitted at the end of the year and comprises of curated evidence gathered throughout the whole year.
