The aims are to enable learners to:

  • Inspire excellence in our students through the delivery of our English curriculum. 
  • Empower students by creating, nurturing and developing a culture of excellence in reading. 
  • Gain sound foundation literacy skills in reading and writing.
  • Deepen students' understanding and appreciation of the ways writers use language to express meaning and create effect.


Course Overview

At this level, English at St Kevin's College allows pupils to develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing; learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation; develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed. The course also develops analysis and communication skills such as synthesis, inference, and the ability to order facts and present opinions effectively. This course prepares students for the NCEA Literacy Common Assessment Activity and IGCSE Language sat in year 10.
