NCEA Level 1 Biology and Chemistry

01BIC

In Biology and Chemistry, students explore the interconnected nature of Biology and Chemistry and take a look into how living organisms interact with the living and non-living parts of their environment

This course contributes towards endorsement at NCEA Level One. This course will prepare students for Level Two Chemistry (02CHE) and Level Two Biology (02BIO). Students who are planning on taking Level Two Physics and/or Level Two Earth Space Science should also take Level One Physics and Earth Space Science (01PES).

Course Overview

In the Biology area of this course, ākonga develop an understanding of the variation, continuity, and interconnectedness of life. They seek evidence to explain the nature of living things and interactions within and between biological systems. This includes how the environment can affect microorganisms and how microorganisms can in turn affect the environment. Ākonga also learn about genetic variation and the relationship this has with expressed traits.

The Chemistry learning area involves the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Ākonga develop an understanding of the atomic composition of matter and use this to explain and predict the properties and behaviour of different everyday materials. The study of chemistry allows us to predict how substances may behave when surrounding conditions change, and how they react to form new substances.

NCEA Level 1 Commerce

NCEA Level 1 Design and Visual Communication

01DVC

Kaua e rangiruatia te hāpai o te hoe; e kore tō tātou waka e ū ki uta. Do not lift the paddle out of unison; our canoe will never reach the shore.

The Technology Learning Area whakataukī offers a framework for understanding technology practice. It tells the story of ākonga, within Technology, embarking on a shared journey, collaborating with others in harmony to achieve a goal.

Design and Visual Communication is about the interrelated strands of design thinking, visual communication, and design influences.

Design thinking encompasses the ideation, exploration, progression, and communication of design ideas into potential outcomes that serve a specific purpose, provide innovative possibilities, and can be informed by design influences and a designer’s perspective.

Within Design and Visual Communication, design consists of product design and spatial design.

Product design focuses on the development of tangible items that have a specific function within people’s everyday lives. It is about understanding the needs of the people and how they will interact with the product. Products use visualisation methods of 2D or 3D forms to show design ideas. Product design may use anthropometric and ergonomic data to inform the designs to meet the needs of the user.

Spatial design is about the designing of three-dimensional spaces in terms of how they are experienced, occupied, or used by people. These spaces can range from those defined by walls and physical elements to those more permeable and determined by ritual, activity, or occupancy. Spatial design incorporates concepts from architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, and urban design.

Visual communication addresses how design ideas and outcomes are appropriately presented to the viewer. Design ideas and outcomes are expressed in a manner that displays the learner’s thoughts, allowing for engagement, feedback, and collaboration.

In Design and Visual Communication, design influences are drawn from design heritages and refer to:

  • history
  • culture
  • awareness of design
  • design tikanga
  • design fields (such as architecture, interior, product, landscape, fashion, and media design)
  • design eras
  • design movements
  • designers
  • design artefacts
  • the elements of design.

Designers acknowledge how their design ideas can meet the needs of people in various situations. Designers are responsive to the ethical, environmental, and cultural impacts they may have.

By developing the skills and techniques of Design and Visual Communication, ākonga will discover how to give form and expression to their ideas. In order to create purposeful and future-focused design ideas, ākonga must be willing to experiment, develop, respond to feedback, and reflect on their design thinking.

Developing these skills will allow them to improve and refine the product and spatial design ideas they propose. It will help them to build confidence in their strengths, talents, and abilities, as well as resilience, resourcefulness, and a sense of ethical responsibility to the peoples and places they are designing for.

Level 2 Spanish prepares you for communicating in Spanish about many of the differences in the world, such as the way that festivals are celebrated and how food takes on special meaning in many cultures.

As your knowledge of the language grows, so will your understanding of how the culture of Spanish-speaking countries makes daily living very different to that of New Zealand. Cultural competence is an important part of the Level 2 course, so experiencing the food, dance, music, festivals and films of Spanish-speaking countries is included in your studies this year. If you are thinking of going travelling later in life or working overseas, Spanish is the language that unlocks these opportunities in over 20 different countries in the world.

NCEA Level 3 Statistics

03STA

Statistics, at its disciplinary core, is the science of understanding data.

Qualitative data, which is difficult or impossible to quantify, and quantitative data are both types of information that statistics helps us analyse, process and use.

The better grasp you have on statistics and statistical analysis, the more prepared you’ll be in a range of activities and situations, from playing games to doing your job.

Statistical analysis is prevalent in all walks of life, and no student should graduate without a basic understanding of statistics.

Statistical analysis is useful in every single academic discipline and virtually every job you’ll ever have (if not to your tasks specifically, it will be to your organisation).

An understanding of basic statistics helps you make decisions about where to live, how to use your time and money, and how to evaluate the information around you.

In this course, you will learn about probability laws and distributions.

The course investigates methods of regression analysis and the development of mathematical models to describe relationships between random variables.

NCEA Level 3 Art History

Art History is recommended if you have an interest in the Arts, English, History or Classical Studies. It is also useful if you are considering further tertiary study in any of these areas, as Art History is also a University Entrance approved subject. It is not necessary to have studied Art History at Level 2, although this is an advantage.

In this course, you will look at the art and artists who influenced and shaped Early Modernism during the volatile years of 1900-1940. By studying this period you will learn about the power behind visual images.

Students will learn to observe, analyse, and critically unpick artworks to find the hidden messages, meanings, and even the branding and propaganda that lies behind a work of art. Because so much of history has been lost through written language and many artworks have been preserved, we can read artworks and learn about the details of artists, patrons, science, politics, religion and civic societies.

Looking at historic art works will help you to understand our visual world now.

Students will look at the changing ideas and values placed on art works and we will teach you how to research, analyse, and write informed discussions in response to artists, artworks, and the context in which the work is made.

Please note there is a heavy written component to this course.
