Classical Studies is a multidisciplinary learning area in which students learn about the art, history, and literature of the classical world. This year for Classics L1 you will be learning about famous Greek and Roman wars, the Greek tragedies of Sophocles, and the Roman slave revolt led by Spartacus. This course cannot be taken alongside HISTOR1.

In this course students will learn a range of skills that will cover graphic design, illustration and photography, (there is room to co-construct this course around what you want to learn!). You will learn to develop and extend ideas through visual exploration and iteration to generate a body of artworks in response to Aotearoa’s multicultural heritage and your identity. This course CAN NOT be taken in conjunction with the Visual Arts Level 1 course as it offers the same standards. This course will teach the skills necessary for Design and Photography at level 2 and 3.

Design & Visual Communication (DVC) is a creative, practical subject for students interested in product design, architecture, spatial design, drawing and visual communication. You will learn how designers generate ideas, develop solutions for real people, and communicate their thinking through freehand sketching, rendering, technical drawing and digital/CAD techniques.

Computer science and digital creation is fun, challenging, and opens many career possibilities.  NCEA level 1 Digital Technologies lays the foundations for further studies in all sorts of areas, and also for vocational purposes.

In this course you will focus on developing the processes and skills to produce at least two digital outcomes - a program and a website.  You will also learn what makes a good user-friendly site or application. 

In this course students will learn about the function of theatre in our society, exploring how we use our bodies to tell stories and how these stories can be used to heal, educate, entertain, or inspire action within the community. We will cover various plays and students will have their own opportunity to make their own play. Students will also learn how to analyse and study live performance features in preparation for the externals

Through a mix of internal and external assessments, you'll strengthen your abilities in analysis, writing, and oral communication. This course provides a strong foundation for future English study and equips you to communicate effectively in a wide range of contexts. 

This course explores the science behind life, farming, and natural cycles. Investigate how microbes live and grow, and how they are used to produce foods like bread, cheese, and yoghurt. Learn how plants and animals grow and are cared for on farms, connecting biology to real agricultural practices. Study the natural cycles of the Sun, Moon, and Earth—discover how they create seasons, influence light and temperature, and shape life on our planet, with a mix of hands-on experiments, outdoor observations.

This is a Textile based course. The course covers all the basics needed for students to become capable and confident designer's and produce some textile items. The products will be related to a real-world requirement with a sustainability focus.

This course has a Food Technology focus. It will look at issues in health, around food and help understand solutions. The focus is on helping others and Practical’s will focus on various cooking methods.  Some industry standards will be included for additional credits.

Level 1 Geography provides students with an introduction to key geographic concepts and processes through the investigation of contemporary environments and issues. Students will examine the global distribution and characteristics of tropical rainforests and undertake a field-based inquiry into the health of a river in Lower Hutt, using a range of geographic data collection and analysis techniques. The course also develops understanding of how natural processes shape environments through the study of climatic, coastal, fluvial, glacial, and tectonic processes. Finally, students will explore decision-making in response to a geographic challenge within the wider Pacific region, evaluating perspectives and considering sustainable solutions to complex environmental issues. 

In this course you will study and learn the basics of good workshop and construction practice. We study and learn good planning and drawing skills, materials knowledge and use checking / tool handling skills to ensure precision and well finished project work. This is a practical, hands-on course with making as the focus and supporting theory and written assessment work along the way.

Want to learn more about yourself and the world around you?  Level 1 HAUORA is all about exploring real-life issues that impact young people today.  This course is about understanding how choices affect your well-being and the well-being of others.  You'll develop practical skills to handle challenges, build confidence, and the make informed decisions.

If you're interested in people, enjoy discussing big ideas around hauora, and want to learn skills, this course will explore this thinking and align it with your own personal experiences as a person, within your whanau and the community.

The theme for the year will be Protest and Race Relations: Shaping Aotearoa. In this course, through multiple field trips you will look at protest and race relations in New Zealand: what was it about, who did it and were they successful? There will be a range of topics, including anti-nuclear protests, the protest at Parihaka, the Polynesian Panthers, and the 1981 Springbok Tour protests. We will also look at resistance to slavery and the later civil rights movement in the USA to understand the impact they’ve had on Aotearoa and the present day. This is a broad, diverse narrative of resistance that will speak to all our learners.  This course cannot be taken alongside Classi1.

Learn basic cookery skills while preparing and cooking light meals and products from drip cakes and mocktails though to writing menus and event planning. (This is Industry Standards course)

This course is designed to strengthen your reading and writing skills while preparing you for success in NCEA English. You'll focus on the Reading and Writing Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) and one internal standard that supports literacy development. Depending on the class, a second internal standard may also be offered. Throughout the year, you'll complete regular reading and writing activities to build your confidence, achieve NCEA Level 1 Literacy requirements, and gain up to 20 credits at a supportive pace. 

Mana Māori is an English course. You will learn to think critically and creatively, by analysing and responding to a wide range of Māori literature. Fine tune your writing skills. Examine how Māori writers are using poetry, short-story, film, and novels to share their experiences of what it means to be Māori in this ever-changing world.  This course is taught in the Wharekura but is open to any student who wishes to take it.  

You will learn to describe and participate in activism from a Māori historical and contemporary stand point. Te Tiriti and biculturalism and a variety of perspectives are explored to enable you to grow your skills and competencies, recognise your own agency and act out of concern for whānau, hapū, iwi, te taiao (nature), hapori (community) and society. Research skills are developed. Analysis skills including cause and effect and critiquing are introduced.

This course is designed for students whose e-asTTle results were at least 4A or higher and who have strong algebraic skills. It is intended for students who are confident in working with algebra and are ready to extend their mathematical thinking. The course will teach you practical skills in Mathematics and Statistics while strengthening your algebraic reasoning. You will solve problems involving fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and rates, and apply measurement and geometry in practical situations. You will also learn how to read, interpret, and describe graphs in statistics, as well as develop your algebra skills by solving a range of algebraic problems. 

In this course, students will learn core musicianship skills. Learning will be centered around performance, composition/songwriting, Māori Music, and analysis, and include use of music technologies. Students enrolled in Level 1 Music will be required to take lessons through the itinerant music programme.

This course immerses tauira in the world of ngā taonga tākaro (traditional Māori games) as a pathway to holistic health, fitness, and cultural connection. Grounded in Te Whare Tapere—the Māori tradition of games, storytelling, and performance—the course integrates karakia, tikanga, and mātauranga associated with moana, whenua, and papa tākaro (play spaces). Tauira will explore the physical and spiritual dimensions of movement, learning how traditional practices like ki-o-rahi, tī rākau, mau rākau, poi, and haka enhance strength, agility, and endurance. Alongside these practical applications, the course introduces foundational sports science principles—anatomy, biomechanics, and exercise performance—examined through a Māori lens to deepen understanding of how the body thrives in ngā taonga tākaro. Weekly physical sessions challenge tauira to apply these concepts, blending ancestral knowledge with modern fitness techniques while fostering personal growth and cultural pride. The course culminates in a dynamic showcase of skills, whether through a tournament, demonstration, or reflective project, ensuring tauira leave with both physical competence and a strengthened connection to te ao Māori.

This course is designed for students who want to develop practical mathematics skills that are useful in everyday life. It focuses on real-life applications of mathematics, helping students build confidence in solving everyday problems. You will learn and apply skills involving fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and rates in practical situations. The course also covers measurement and geometry through real-world examples, as well as basic statistics, including how to read, interpret, and describe graphs and data encountered in daily life. 

This Level 1 Outdoor Education course provides students with the opportunity to develop confidence, resilience, and practical outdoor skills through a range of exciting adventure-based activities. Students will participate in a tramp, an overnight camping experience, and mountain biking excursions, where they will learn how to safely travel and work in outdoor environments. Throughout the course, students will gain knowledge and skills in trip planning, navigation, campsite setup, outdoor safety, environmental awareness, and equipment management. They will be challenged to step outside their comfort zones while building physical fitness and an appreciation for the natural environment.

Pacific Studies standards focus on the cultures, languages, societies, development and change of countries in the Pacific.

What chemical reactions and forces make a rocket launch possible? In this course, you’ll explore science at the space frontier, combining hands-on experiments with real-world applications. You’ll investigate the chemistry of fuels, the physics of motion, and the forces that allow rockets to escape Earth’s gravity. With a strong focus on practical work, you’ll build skills in experimentation, measurement, and problem-solving. This course provides a pathway to Level 2 Chemistry, Biology or Physics and is ideal for students curious about space, engineering, and technology.

This course combines Level 1 Science, Chemistry and Biology achievement standards. This course requires students to actively investigate the condition of Wainuiomata waterways and identify scientific approaches that could be used to restore the health of our awa. This course can lead on to senior Chemistry and Biology.

Intrinsic to Te Ao Haka are culture, language, and identity. Te Ao Haka is a vehicle used to wānanga and communicate culture, tikanga, knowledge systems, and iwi traditions. Te Ao Haka is enabling and centres around the importance of family, marae, iwi, hapu, and waka through connection with the past, present, and future. This belonging gives ākonga a purpose to strive towards and achieve to their full potential, including empowering them to have fun and enjoy the performing arts.

This course focuses on the traditions of toi by exploring the artistic aspects, whakairo, customs, whakapapa connections, and tikanga Māori while providing hands-on experience in whakairo, kōwhaiwhai, and toi Māori (Māori art). You'll delve deep into the world of whakairo, learning not only the practical skills of carving but also the cultural knowledge, stories, and tikanga that give each piece its spiritual significance. Through both theoretical understanding and practical application, this course connects you to the rich heritage of Māori arts, ensuring you develop technical expertise while strengthening your relationship with Māori traditions, values, and ancestral practices—honouring the past while creating for the future.

In this course students will learn a range of skills that will cover drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. You will learn to develop and extend ideas through visual exploration and iteration, to generate a body of artworks in response to Aotearoa’s multicultural heritage and your identity.  This course CAN NOT be taken in conjunction with the DESPHO1 course as it offers the same standards. You will select your best artwork to be included in our end-of-year school exhibition! 

This Physics and Earth and Space Science course is a great introduction to developing a range of scientific investigation skills, including information analysis and critical thinking, with a specific focus on our environment here in Aotearoa New Zealand and the ecosystems within it. The course also provides an opportunity to learn about scientific concepts of force, motion, pressure energy and geological cycles. While it leads directly to Level 2 Physics and Earth and Space Science, it is also possible to enter Level 2 Chemistry or Biology from this course.

Explore how different plants and animals are uniquely adapted to their way of life and investigate the biological connections beyond the classroom. Find out what goes on inside your very own cells and how they keep you alive and functioning. If you’re curious about how life works at its smallest scale and enjoy learning science through both lab and outdoor investigations, this is the course for you. Leads on to Biology Level 3.

This course is a deep dive into the chemical reactions between atoms. Use our lab equipment to measure amounts smaller than a single drop, investigate what makes reactions happen, and explore how to control their speed. You’ll learn about acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, and the structure of substances at a molecular level. Through experiments and problem-solving, you’ll develop skills in precision measurement, data analysis, and scientific communication. This course leads to Level 3 Chemistry and supports pathways into fields such as engineering, health sciences, environmental science, food technology, and forensic science.

Classical Studies is a multidisciplinary learning area in which students learn about the art, history, and literature of the classical world. This year for Classics L2 you will be learning about Greek art and architecture by studying the Parthenon and other temples, what life was like in the Golden Age of Athens, and you as a class will have the choice between the Iliad and the Odyssey.

In this course you will learn to create and respond to your own design situation. We will be looking at creating your own shop, game or graphic novel. You will follow the design process and create logos, type, images and posters for your internal assessments, and 2 sub briefs towards your external portfolio boards. You will learn how to digitise your hand drawn images using Adobe illustrator and photoshop following a three-stage process in which you create: concepts, developments and finals for each stage of your design briefs. 

Computer science and digital creation is fun, challenging, and opens many career possibilities.  

In this course you will focus on developing the processes and skills to produce at least two digital outcomes - an advanced Python program and a sophisticated website. You will be consolidating your application of User Interfaces (UI)  and  User Experience (UX). You will also choose an area of computer science to discuss and apply in the end of year exam.  

Level 2 Drama is all about exploring acting skills, how theatre works and its place in society to heal, educate, entertain, and transform. Students will have multiple opportunities to perform and develop their own drama as well as analyse famous playwrights and their works. A willingness to perform is crucial to success in this course. 

This course is designed for students who speak English as a second language or who do not mainly speak English at home and offers up to 20 credits per year level. You will develop your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at Levels 1, 2, and 3, based on your current English level and abilities. You will work towards English Language Unit Standards that suit your level and help you gain confidence using English in everyday life, school, further study, and the workplace.

Level 2 NCEA English offers 24 credits and builds on the skills developed in Level 1. Students should enrol if they have attained a minimum of 10 credits at level 1 English. You'll deepen your reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills by exploring complex ideas, analysing themes, characters, and language techniques, and communicating your own responses with confidence. Through a mix of internal and external assessments, you'll strengthen your abilities in analysis, writing, and oral communication. This course prepares you for Level 3 English and further study while equipping you to communicate effectively in a wide range of contexts.  

You will design and create your garment suitable for a client need. You will be encouraged to enter competitions. This is an achievement standard course.

This is a food-based course. You will be working clients with food related requirements, eg: elderly or young children. You will produce suitable foods to meet these needs. Also, if appropriate Industry standards will be included for additional credits.

In Level 2 Geography students will explore the dynamic relationship between people and environment through a range of contemporary geographic contexts and investigations. Students will develop their research skills through AS91244, conducting a geographic inquiry with a focus on human geography, while AS91245 examines the significant New Zealand geographic issue of forestry slash and its impacts on communities and the environment. Through AS91246, students will investigate the global distribution of urban centres, analysing the factors that influence patterns of urbanisation across the world. Preparation for the external examination, AS91240, will centre on the Tongariro Volcanic Environment, where students will gain an in-depth understanding of the natural processes and features that shape this remarkable New Zealand landscape. 

This course builds on the learning in Year 11 and allows you to develop your abilities in using drawing and mathematics for planning, calculation and checking. You also will deepen your knowledge of both hand and power tools and their applications for material processing. You will produce two outdoor furniture projects and can follow set plans or develop your own ideas into outcomes to do this. There is also a personal project option for students wishing to plan and produce a self directed project of their own choosing.

Hauora at Level 2 digs deeper into the real issues that affect young people, their whānau, and their communities. This course challenges you to think critically about how these issues impact wellbeing, and encourages you to explore strategies for making positive changes. You’ll learn how personal choices, cultural values, and social influences all connect to hauora and the health of communities.

Level 2 Hauora is discussion-based and practical, with opportunities to research, debate, and reflect on topics that matter in everyday life. History is about engaging with the historical narratives of people, places, and events from the past. This year, this course will cover two major events: The Vietnam War and the Korean War. We will be looking at the causes, consequences and significance of these two Cold War era events and the significance of these two wars to New Zealand.

This is a practical unit standard based course with a focus on industry level presentation and service. Students will work in groups to make meals, desserts and sweet treats. They will gain basic cookery, catering, and planning skills.

Mana Māori is a combined Level 2 & 3 English course. You will learn to think critically and creatively, by analysing and responding to a wide range of Māori literature. Examine how Māori writers are using poetry, short-story, film, and novels to share their experiences of what it means to be Māori in this ever-changing world.  This course is taught in the Wharekura but is open to any student who wishes to take it.

This course is designed for students who plan to pursue careers in engineering, medicine, architecture, computer science, data science, finance, or other mathematics-intensive fields. It is intended only for students who have successfully completed NCEA Level 1 Mathematics and have a strong foundation in algebra. The course develops advanced mathematical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills to prepare students for senior mathematics and university study. 

This course is designed for students who want to pursue a career in trades, nursing, business, journalism, accounting etc. It offers you practical skills that you can apply in many areas of life. You will be calculating angles, areas, and sides in any triangular shape as well as doing statistical experiments, writing reports, and calculating the future value of your investments. This is a very versatile course. It opens many doors to different careers. The prerequisite of this course is any course from L1 Maths.

Students will learn to understand and apply media conventions, analyse and create their own films through the study of directorship techniques and media influence. You will become a filmmaker and earn 13 credits for making a design plan, writing a script, and shooting a short film between 3 - 8 minutes long. Students will gain expertise in using media equipment such as cameras, tripods, microphones, lights, and editing software. 

In this course students will be able to engage in a range of learning around performance, composition/song writing, research, analysis and music technology. Students will be required to take instrumental lessons through our itinerant programme. 

Designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of exercise science and its application to traditional maori games and past times, specifically ki o rahi. Students will explore principles of biomechanics, physiology, and movement analysis. Students will explore the principles of biomechanics, physiology, and movement analysis as they relate to the dynamic and culturally rich game of Kīorahi. Through active participation, students will develop their physical fitness, teamwork, and strategic thinking while gaining a deeper appreciation for tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori.

Year 12 Painting is a course that builds on learning from the level 1 Visual Art course with specific focus on painting. In this course you will be developing and extending your knowledge of painting techniques and conventions within a theme of your choice. You will be analysing artist models and considering how their techniques and approaches can influence your outcomes.  It is recommended that you have taken Art at level 1 before taking this course. 

This is an introductory course that teaches you the basic techniques and conventions of Photography. You will create a body of work related to a theme of your choice. It is recommended that you have taken Art at level 1 before taking this course.

This course builds on the knowledge and skills developed in Level 1 Physical Education, challenging students to deepen their understanding of movement, performance, and wellbeing. Students will participate in a range of physical activities while exploring factors that influence performance, skill development, physical fitness, and participation. Through practical and theoretical learning, students will develop leadership, communication, critical thinking, and self-management skills, enabling them to evaluate their own performance and make informed decisions that promote lifelong health and physical activity. 

Level 2 Physics helps unlock the wonders of the physical world. Students delve into the principles that govern motion, energy, and forces, and uncover the secrets behind the phenomena that shape our daily lives. Through experiments, discussions, and real-world applications, students will develop a deeper understanding of light and sound, mechanics, electricity, electromagnetism, and nuclear physics. The subject provides a pathway towards many careers including architecture, astrophysics, climate science & meteorology, engineering, forensics, health science and medicine.

This course is custom designed to better support students on Individual Academic Plans (Trades/Gateway/Courses). It will be student-driven and offer two standards from a range of social science subjects at level 2 and 3. Students will create an individual learning and assessment plan to best support their out of school timetable. Students who have never done History, Geography, Classics, or Social Studies are very welcome.

The Sports Academy Programme is designed for motivated and dedicated students who aspire to pursue a future in the sports industry. This programme supports the development of well-rounded individuals by providing opportunities to grow as athletes, leaders, coaches, officials, administrators, and sport industry professionals.Students will engage in practical and theoretical learning experiences that develop their knowledge of sports performance, health and wellbeing, leadership, coaching, teamwork, and career pathways within the sporting sector. The programme aims to equip students with the skills, attitudes, and industry awareness required to succeed in a wide range of sport-related careers. The Sports Academy Programme is for students who demonstrate a genuine commitment to sport and a desire to pursue further study, training, or employment within the sports industry. This course focuses on the traditions of whakairo (Māori carving), exploring the artistic aspects, customs, whakapapa connections, and tikanga Māori while providing hands-on experience in whakairo, kōwhaiwhai, and toi Māori (Māori art). You'll delve deep into the world of whakairo, learning not only the practical skills of carving but also the cultural knowledge, stories, and tikanga that give each piece its spiritual significance. Through both theoretical understanding and practical application, this course connects you to the rich heritage of Māori arts, ensuring you develop technical expertise while strengthening your relationship with Māori traditions, values, and ancestral practices—honouring the past while creating for the future.

Tourism is a Unit Standard based course that looks into various aspects of the tourist industry. Students will study the different types of tourists as well as the needs of tourists. Another area of focus will be researching attractions, activities and events from various regions of the world and New Zealand.

Biology at Level 3 is a comprehensive course exploring the living world from a biological perspective. You’ll investigate topics ranging from genetics and evolution to the human body and how it maintains balance. Students will also carry out a practical biological investigation. Studying Biology can lead to pathways in nursing, physiotherapy, midwifery, sports therapy, medicine, sustainability, health, and nutrition.

This course explores why substances react differently to heat, pressure, and other physical forces, and how they combine to form entirely new materials. You’ll develop advanced lab skills while investigating organic compounds and their role in industry, the impact of acids and bases on biological systems, and how oxidation–reduction reactions are applied in manufacturing. This is a challenging, hands-on course designed for students aiming for science-related pathways such as engineering, medicine, environmental science, and industrial chemistry

Classical Studies is a multidisciplinary learning area in which students learn about the art, literature, and ideologies of the classical Roman world. Next year, this course will have three major topics: The art of the Ara Pacis and Augustus statues, the idea of heroism as seen in epic poetry and today, and the leadership and legacy of Augustus.

In this course you will learn to create and respond to your own design situation of your own choice. You will follow the design process and create logos, type, images and posters for your internal assessments, and 4 sub briefs towards your external portfolio boards. You will learn how to digitise your hand drawn images using Adobe illustrator and photoshop following a three-stage process in which you create: concepts, developments and finals for each stage of your design briefs. 

Computer science and digital creation is fun, challenging, and opens many career possibilities.  NCEA level 3 Digital Technologies prepares you for further studies in the field at university.   

In this course you will focus on developing the processes and skills to produce at least two digital outcomes that showcases these complex skills - one Python program and a website.    You will be consolidating your application of User Interfaces (UI)  and  User Experience (UX). You will also choose an area of computer science to discuss and apply in the end of year exam.   

Level 3 Drama is a continuation of everything students will have learnt in previous years. This course is designed for students who speak English as a second language or who do not mainly speak English at home and offers up to 20 credits per year level. You will develop your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at Levels 1, 2, and 3, based on your current English level and abilities. You will work towards English Language Unit Standards that suit your level and help you gain confidence using English in everyday life, school, further study, and the workplace.

This is a Health focus course, working with Foods. You will be investigating Nutritional Concern's for New Zealand and producing Foods suitable to meet the need of a client.

Mana Māori is a combined Level 2 & 3 English course. You will learn to think critically and creatively, by analysing and responding to a wide range of Māori literature. Fine tune your speech writing and speech making skills. Examine how Māori writers are using poetry, short-story, film, and novels to share their experiences of what it means to be Māori in this ever-changing world.  This course is taught in the Wharekura but is open to any student who wishes to take it.

You will learn to describe and participate in activism from a Māori historical and contemporary stand point. This course is designed for students who want to pursue career in information technology, engineering, science, medicine, mathematics, business etc. The course will teach you practical skills in mathematics along with advanced algebra skills. The course is open to anyone who took Mathematics with Calculus at L2. Upon successful completion of this course, you will gain UE in Mathematics.

This course is open to anyone who took Level 2 Maths with Stats. You will gain good foundation in Maths if you want to pursue tertiary education. This course offers 15 internal UE credits. There are no exams in this course.

In this course students will learn to understand and apply media conventions, analyse and create their own films through the study of directorship techniques and media influence. You will become a filmmaker and earn 13 credits for making a design plan, writing a script, and shooting a short film between 4 - 8 minutes long. Students will gain expertise in using media equipment such as cameras, tripods, microphones, lights, and editing software.

In this course you will be generating, developing and extending your knowledge of Painting techniques and conventions within a theme of your choice. Your theme will be relevant to a personal, social or political idea that will sustain your interest across the full year. You will be responding to and analysing artist models and how their techniques and approaches can influence your visual outcomes.

In this course you will be developing and extending your knowledge of photography techniques and conventions within a subject matter/theme of your choice. This course builds on the photography level 2 introductory course. It is recommended that you have taken the level 2 course before entering this one. Students will create an individual learning and assessment plan to best support their out of school timetable. Students who have never done History, Geography, Classics, or Social Studies are very welcome.
