LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 21 months of the Education Review Office and Te Uho o Te Nikau Primary School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Te Uho o Te Nikau Primary School opened in 2019 and caters for students in Years 1 to 6. The school serves a culturally diverse and rapidly growing community in Flatbush, Auckland.
The school’s vision is to ‘challenge every learner to explore the world together’ and its mission is to ’nourish, grow and thrive’. Te Uho o Te Nikau Primary School also hosts a satellite unit for Mt Richmond School.
Te Uho o Te Nikau Primary School strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:
- build professional capability and collective capacity which empowers learners and enhances student outcomes
- develop a responsive curriculum guided by effective teaching and inclusive opportunities to learn
- build, strengthen and extended educationally powerful connections and relationships.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on the Te Uho o Te Nikau Primary School website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the school is building and sustaining teacher capacity and consistent school wide pedagogy of practice so that all children experience success.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- maintaining and sustaining consistent school wide practices as the school continues to grow
- ensuring every learner has equitable learning opportunities to experience success across each kainga
- ensuring teachers grow professionally and are well resourced to provide excellent and equitable outcomes for children.
The school expects to see:
- consistent school wide teacher practice in literacy and numeracy
- effective co-teaching teams that utilise their collective strengths to meet the needs of the children in their kainga
- an upward trend in achievement in literacy and numeracy and children’s accelerated progress in literacy and numeracy over their time at school
- assessment practices being used to inform quality teaching programmes.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to build and sustain teacher capacity and consistent school-wide pedagogy of practice so that all children are able to experience success:
- leadership that reflects ongoing commitment to achieve the school’s vision, values and strategic direction
- prior to the school’s establishment there has been an on-going and genuine commitment to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi through bicultural education and a strong partnership with Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki
- inclusive relationships and connections with whānau and families contributes to a strong sense of belonging
- the building design and leadership of pedagogy enables collaborative teacher practice.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- continuing to provide professional development learning opportunities to strengthen teacher capabilities and student agency
- working with teachers to support them to deepen learning partnerships with whānau so they become active participants in their child’s learning
- continuing to enact a local curriculum that interests and excites children to support trends of equity and excellence
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
