The theme of this course is ‘My Culture Defines Me’. In this course you will explore and develop your understanding of English language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking using the idea of your culture and its special traditions. We will discuss and identify aspects around what culture means to you, the differences and similarities of your culture to that of the Maori people and ways in which your own culture is recognised and celebrated in another country such as Aotearoa, New Zealand.

‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ is an observation that contains a general truth. This truth being that a single still image can express a meaning or idea more effectively than a mere verbal or written description. Photography is not the only way to capture the world through a single still image, but it is one of the most effective. Look no further than a magazine article, billboard, book cover, social media feed(Instagram, Facebook, TikTok), poster to see it- photographs have power! If you want to harness that power and learn how to take the best possible photos, than this programme is for you! This course is centred around studying basic photography skills, theory and established photographic work. You will create a body of photographic work that explores your worldview. This project combines writing and practical work , which will be presented in a format that is engaging and suits your learning needs. You will be able to develop your understanding of how to use a wide-range of Photographic tools that are used in the Creative Industry.

Have you ever wondered about how important your joints are to the overall function and movement of your body? If this is something that you would like to investigate more then this is the course for you. Anatomical Sports Investigation offers both practical and academic components focusing on body movement and sports injuries and prevention. The practical element of this class is based around a sporting context. You and your peers will choose a sport that you will all train for and at the end of the unit of work, participate in a class tournament that will run for a week. You will be assessed for the way you play and skills you demonstrate in the game. The theory in this course will focus on applying knowledge of basic anatomy to the skills that you will demonstrate during the practical element of this course. This means looking at muscle groups and bones that form the joints in your body and how they are used during the sport you choose and play. Another aspect we will look at is injury prevention where you will learn about types of injuries you may sustain in any aspect of physical activity, how to prevent them and the risks and hazards around the sport. This is important knowledge to have in order to prepare yourselves well and keep safe before,during and after training and the tournament.

This course blends together a range of creative disciplines, including: arts, design, digital media, computing, engineering, and entrepreneurship. When taking this course you will be working with a range of media and be encouraged to brainstorm, research, sketch, design on computer, 3D print, laser cut, and construct in 3 dimensions. You will complete one project in the semester. You will either be given a problem, or preferably try and solve a problem that you have identified and defined. You will explore a range of content to inspire and inform your work, you will be expected to explore sustainability, mātauranga Māori, and other cultural, societal, and design influences. You will then design (using sketching and computers), create (using hand techniques and machine techniques), and test (try out for strength, usability, effectiveness) until you have a product that is functional and meets the needs of the problem. Throughout this process you will record your work in a portfolio and speak to your peers, teachers to help improve your design. It is possible to take this course more than once if you would like to extend your learning (alternative content and assessment can be offered).

This course will investigate texts that come from a history of those who have suffered, at the hands of others, and then worked to overcome these barriers. We will look at individuals, who have not only survived their torment, but been changed, and have used their change to challenge the world. Firstly, we will study a selection of texts - student choice. You will select written and visual texts to study. Then, we will select our method of presentation to demonstrate our analysis of text. Finally, we will select and shape our texts for a specific audience and purpose.

During this subject you will plan and complete a 4 week training program to measure how much you can improve during a training program. (Must be physically able to complete the training program in order to complete the assessment) You will use the “science” behind training / exercise to explain why parts of the training program were better or “botz”. The adventure, challenge and exhilaration that comes with being outdoors is an experience that you will get in this course. The outdoors presents many learning and growth opportunities. In particular to this course, you will be learning about leadership that leads to an effective team and how to manage risk to ensure your own and others safety. In groups you will be working towards planning and running an outdoor activity for the other groups in the class. As you work together in your group, you will learn about leadership strategies that will help you to run an effective team - teamwork makes the dream work. Individually, you will be looking at the risks of a challenging outdoor activity and come up with strategies to manage those risks effectively. Your safety is paramount, especially in a high risk environment such as the outdoors. The more informed and prepared you are, the safer and enjoyable the outdoors will be. There are two parts of this assessment - part 1 is reflective logs based on the leadership strategies you chose to apply and part 2 is a written report on risk management.

This project combines a written component, which will be presented alongside your body of work. You will: Study existing Cover Art designs .This could be from books,magazines, newspapers, video games, music albums, and comic books. For example you might be designing a local community structure, or a small house, a structure for the school, maybe even a small holiday house. Anatomical Sports Investigation offers both practical and academic components focusing on body movement and sports injuries and prevention. The practical element of this class is based around a sporting context. You and your peers will choose a sport that you will all train for and at the end of the unit of work, participate in a class tournament that will run for a week. You will be assessed for the way you play and skills you demonstrate in the game. The theory in this course will focus on applying knowledge of basic anatomy to the skills that you will demonstrate during the practical element of this course. This means looking at muscle groups and bones that form the joints in your body and how they are used during the sport you choose and play. Another aspect we will look at is injury prevention where you will learn about types of injuries you may sustain in any aspect of physical activity, how to prevent them and the risks and hazards around the sport. When taking this course you will be working with a range of media and be encouraged to brainstorm, research, sketch, design on computer, 3D print, laser cut, and construct in 3 dimensions. You will complete one project in the semester. You will either be given a problem, or preferably try and solve a problem that you have identified and defined. You will explore a range of content to inspire and inform your work, you will be expected to explore sustainability, mātauranga Māori, and other cultural, societal, and design influences. You will then design (using sketching and computers), create (using hand techniques and machine techniques), and test (try out for strength, usability, effectiveness) until you have a product that is functional and meets the needs of the problem. Throughout this process you will record your work in a portfolio and speak to your peers, teachers to help improve your design. Would you like to design spaces? Do you think you might like to be an Architect in the future? This course will provide you an introduction to Spatial Design, which is the design of spaces both interior and exterior. You will be using a range of techniques by sketching and using a computer to produce your designs.

You will complete one project in the semester. You will be provided with a situation, or you could offer up a situation that you would like to explore. For example you might be designing a local community structure, or a small house, a structure for the school, maybe even a small holiday house. You will then research and explore other design outcomes, you will be expected to explore sustainability, mātauranga Māori, and other cultural, societal, and design influences. The next step will be to start designing your own ideas (using sketching and computers), you will refine your ideas and make a small model of your design, and the final phase will be presenting your design idea visually using computer rendering. Throughout this process you will record your work in a portfolio and speak to your peers and teachers to help improve your design.

Studying the past makes it possible for things to change in the future. In this course by changing the lens of learning, you will travel in time and critically analyse feminist history, from the role of women in ancient civilizations right through to our present day. You will explore key themes which impact women, such as; the birth of patriarchy, the notion of women as property, knowledge and power dynamics (who writes history?), women’s rights and so much more. This course looks at ‘restoring and re-storying’, traditional perspectives and “his” stories, which often classify women as either victims or heroines. In Whose ‘his’ story? Restoring by re-storying ‘her’ story! you are required to research the problematic in order to discover lesser known and alternative views. You will study about women throughout the ages who created waves of change in their worlds, as they carved out their own independent identities.

By examining how the media constructs messages about individuals, communities and cultures, students will gain a deeper understanding of how and why media products are purposefully produced, controlled and distributed.
