Level 1 Animal Welfare

Course Description - This course is for students interested in biology, veterinary studies, environmental science, conservation, soil science, food science, farm consulting, and running their own farm or agriculture business. There are three internal standards covered over the first three terms, and you can choose one of two external standards to sit at the end of the year. Animal Welfare will introduce what you can raise, where, in New Zealand, and the various ways you can raise animals to make a living. Possible Activities - In term one, you will look at the range of soils, landscapes, resources and climates in New Zealand, and use your knowledge to find the best type of animals to raise in any particular area. In term two, you will start an investigation into how local farmers manage their pastures and fodder crops. In term three, you will help raise our dairy calves, and monitor their cost, weight and health. You will write a report on their development, the profit we make, and recommending best practices based on the results we achieve. Throughout the year, you will be studying soil, the key to all life. You will also study how to feed, breed and keep farm animals healthy. In term three and four, you can choose one of these subjects to study more deeply for an external exam. Course Description - Students will study past and present artist and learn about their styles and techniques. The outcome of this course is that our students will develop confidence and techniques to bring the best out in their own work. We also usually tackle a couple of community projects through the work. Murals or Installations, which is voluntary but can be included in credits. Possible Activities - Visual Diary studying painters using their work to inform your work developing a folio. Level 1 Building and Construction

Course Description - This course is an industry based course completing Unit Standards prepared by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) and is suitable for students wishing to follow a pathway into tertiary/trades related careers. Possible Activities - Students will be introduced to and use hand tools, portable power tools and fixed machinery. Completed projects, theory and evidence of learning are submitted for assessment. Examples of work and products to be independently designed and constructed include a toolbox, saw horse and tool chest. A total of 8 Level 1 Unit standard credits are offered as well as 6 Level 2 Unit standard credits. (The Level 2 ‘Tools’ Unit Standard forms something of a pre-requisite for continuing onto the Level 2/3 program). Course Endorsement Available: NO

Course Description - With its focus on design thinking, digital technology supports students to be innovative, reflective and critical in designing new models, products, software, systems and tools that will benefit people. They will explore and understand how digital applications and systems are created for human interaction. Possible Activities - Students develop skills related to designing and producing quality, fit-for purpose, digital outcomes such as websites, computer programmes or videos. During this process students will be required to critically analyse and explore how humans interact with digital technology. Level 1 Drama

Course Description - This course is for students who want to develop their communication skills and add to their literacy credits by engaging with Drama skills and technologies onstage. The Waihi College Drama programme also seeks to offer first hand experiences of Drama related professions and enables students to form professional relationships with potential employers. The year 11 course also begins an academic pathway suitable for any students anticipating tertiary study. Students will work with Devised Drama, Theatre Form, and Scripted Scenes. They will have opportunities to perform in and out of school and to attend professional theatrical productions as a part of their coursework. Possible Activities - Attend 2 professional productions (e.g. The Pop-Up Globe and a contemporary event such as a Red Leap Theatre production) Perform group devised theatre for an invited audience Perform a children’s show at a local primary school. Level 1 Geography

Course Description - Geography is the study of the environment as the home of people. It seeks to interpret the world and how it changes over time – past, present, and future. This course is for students who want to develop their geographical skills from the basics they learned at Year 10. The course looks at a range of very different geographical concepts and skills and offers students the opportunity to try out new concepts that they have not used in junior years. This level 1 course forms the foundation of a pathway to L2 and L3 Geography. Possible Activities - The Year 11 Geography course consists of both Natural and Human Geography. The course looks at Natural Events (earthquakes), sustainability (tourism in the Maldives), global issues (electronic waste, earthquakes, access to safe water), and local geographic topics (shopping in Waihi). Skills to do with using maps and a variety of other information sources are followed up and these are applied in research work. Course Description - Purpose – Graphics (aka Design and Visual Communication) develop knowledge and skills in designing Architecture and Products. Pathway – This course can lead to Level Two Graphics and/or Level Two Building. This course challenges students to think about the fundamentals of design and how this is used in developing Products and Architecture. Briefs or units of work are used to solve Architecture and Product Design problems. Students will learn to use sketching techniques, produce formal drawings using instruments; computer presentation and computer based drawing programmes. While designing a sleep out students will generate work for both internal and external standards including sketching, formal drawing, computer drawing, note writing and presentation. Growing for Profit will introduce what you can grow, where, in New Zealand, and the various ways you can grow and use plants to make a living. Possible Activities - In term one, you will look at the range of soils, landscapes, resources and climates in New Zealand, and use your knowledge to find the best type of crop to grow in any particular area. In term one you will also start an experiment comparing organic and conventional growing, this will finish in term two. In terms two and three, you will try various different ways to breed new plants from parent stock. Throughout the year, you will be studying soil, the key to all life, and plant physiology. Course Description - In this course students will learn to identify and generalise patterns, to process and interpret information critically, to justify and communicate their findings, and to work with precision and accuracy. This course is a prerequisite for students aiming to advance to level 2 mathematics and beyond. Possible Activities - Students will carry out statistical investigations, produce reports justifying their findings, apply knowledge of basic trigonometry to solve real world problems, and apply number knowledge to solve problems in a financial context. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of algebra. This will involve graphing, identifying patterns and relationships, forming and solving equations, and applying this knowledge to solve problems set in real life contexts. Students will choose do some learning based around Algebra and will then choose to complete wither an internal based on algebra graphing or an external based on algebra problem solving. Course Description - This course encourages the student to look at what affects their participation in activities and basic self-management strategies. There will be an introduction to biophysical principles. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a ski trip to Mount Ruapehu to look at risk management and responsible behaviour in an outdoor environment. This class is based on theory as well as practical. Possible Activities - Ski trip in term 3, most major sports with a large component of writing and evaluation. Course Endorsement Available: YES

Possible Activities - This course involves carrying out a practical physics investigation that requires the graphical representation and producing a mathematical description of a linear relationship. The theory will cover motion, forces, energy, atomic structure, particle theory, rates of reaction relating to acids and bases and biological ideas relating to genetic variation. NB. You may take this course and Level 1 Science investigations If this course is selected in conjunction with Level 1 Practical Science then you cannot gain credits for AS90930 twice but it will ensure a reassessment opportunity for this standard. Level 1 Science Investigations

Course Description - This course is for students who want to have a solid background in Science and gain good hands-on Science skills. The majority of assessments in this course are internal and revolve around building experimental and research skills. You may take this course and Level 1 Science. Possible Activities - This course involves learning about chemical reactions and carrying out a chemical procedure to collect and process primary data and interpreting the results. It also includes carrying out a practical physics investigation that requires the graphical representation and producing a mathematical description of the relationship. You will also be researching biological ideas relating to how humans use and are affected by micro-organisms as well as researching the way carbon is cycled on our Earth. Students will complete 3 practical internal assessments. For the fourth standard, studnets will chose between a research assignment or an external standard based on Acids and Bases NB. Students can take this course as well as Level 1 Science. If this course is selected in conjunction with Level 1 Science then you cannot gain credits for AS90930 twice but it will ensure a reassessment opportunity for this standard. Level 1 Te Reo Maori

Course Description - The course provides students an opportunity to connect with the Māori culture and language in the context of their student’s everyday lives. The purpose of this course is to enable students to converse and communicate in familiar social situations, using basic Te Reo Māori language patterns and structures. The content will allow students to develop a range of reading, writing and listening strategies for beginners. There are four components to this course: Tuhituhi (Writing), Kōrero (Speaking), Whakarongo (Listening) and Pānui (Reading). This course is the foundational platform and pre-requisite for Te Reo Māori NCEA Level 2. Students will complete all the components of the course but will only complete the assessments that they have a particular interest in. Likely credit number for this course is 12 - 18 credits. Possible Activities - During this course we are likely to visit two different marae to experience Te Reo and Tīkanga Māori in an authentic context. Further activities that will lend authenticity to this course could include visits to both the Rotorua and Hamilton Museums, Koroneihana Celebrations, Polyfest, Hauraki Kapahaka Festival and Hauraki Aquaculture sites. Level 1 Tikanga Maori

Course Description - The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction for students to some basic understanding of commonly practiced tikanga at the marae and/or school. Concepts such as whanaungatanga, Ako, Pōwhiri, whakapapa and Ātua Māori will be investigated through a Māori lens. The traditional histories, current practices and future roles of these customs will be examined in relation to the students’ own world. Many of the Unit Standards and the concepts related to them, in this course, can be linked to and are relevant for assessments in other fields, such as the performance of kapahaka, Health, Environmental Studies, Tourism, Hospitality and Teaching. Possible Activities - During this course we will host different marae/students at the local marae to allow our students to demonstrate Te Reo and Tīkanga Māori in formal authentic contexts. Further activities that will lend authenticity to this course could include visits to both the Rotorua and Hamilton Museums, Koroneihana Celebrations, Polyfest, Hauraki Kapahaka Festival and Hauraki Aquaculture sites. Level 1 Volcanics Online Learning

Can't find a course that floats your boat? Do you want to study a subject that is not offered at Waihi College? Volcanics Online Learning gives you the opportunity to enrol in a face-to-face online course taught by a specialist subject teacher based in another North Island secondary school. You'll meet with the subject teacher, and the rest of your class, once a week in an hour long video conferencing session using Zoom. For the rest of the week, you'll work on the tasks that you have been set in time for the next lesson. If you need help, you can simply email or message your teacher, and he/she will get back to you. You'll be allocated timetabled time to work on your VLN subject. However, your one hour Zoom weekly lesson may well take place during one of your other subjects - we cannot control what time this weekly session takes place (although it will always be the same time).. You must be prepared to miss an hour of your timetabled subject in order to attend your Zoom class. Course Description - The purpose of this course is to further develop Level 1 learning of theoretical knowledge, skills and processes for the Building and Construction industry. This course is an industry based course for students from Level 2 wishing to follow a pathway into tertiary/trades related careers. Students develop the skills needed to independently use hand tools, portable power tools and fixed machinery as used in the Building and Construction industry. Students complete practical projects while also completing Level 3 Unit Standards. A total of 15 Level 3 Unit standards will be offered in 2019. Possible Activities - Students will construct more challenging projects of a larger scale compared to Level 1. Completed projects, theory and evidence of learning are submitted for assessment. Possible Activities - This course will show a range of different mathematical skills including collecting, sorting and analysing data for statistical investigations, investigating how networks can help to optimise calculations and using trigonometry to work with triangle calculations. The external standards are very different with one looking at the foundations of calculus and how it can be used to solve complex problems and the other looking at probability and the chances or risks of events happening. *Note that AS91264 (Inference) is offered as an alternative to students who do not wish to complete AS91262 (Calculus). This will build the students’ confidence and develop their ability to converse and communicate in an increasingly wider variety of social situations and general conversations. A Gateway placement will involve behaving like an employee of the work placement that you attend. All Gateway placements will be on Tuesday so there will be no interruption to your normal classes. Placements can be over different time frames, from a week to a full year. To be considered for Gateway you first have to complete a work readiness programme that will prepare you for the workplace. FULL YEAR COURSE The Waikato Trades Academy (WTA) is a secondary-tertiary partnership which allows year 11, 12 and 13 secondary school students to study at Wintec while still at school, getting the benefits of both worlds. The WTA gives students a head start; gaining specific and practical experience and skills in an industry based setting, and the opportunity to move directly into a job or apprenticeship, or further study, on completion of secondary school. The Academy provides sector related credits required to earn a Vocational Pathway Award on your NCEA Level 2 and NCEA Level 3 qualifications. The Construction and Infrastructure course takes place at Koopu, Thames every Tuesday, with occasional Tuesdays in Hamilton. Course Description - This course is for people who have an interest in biology, veterinary studies, farm consulting, environmental science, conservation, forestry, soil science, food science, banking, marketing, border control and many other agricultural careers when they leave university. It is an overview of the economics of agriculture, looking specifically at how to make a profit growing kiwifruit and dairy farming – our biggest horticultural and agricultural export industries. Using these examples, we learn principles that give you a basic understanding of the entire range of primary industry. Possible Activities - There are two long-term studies to complete in this course. In the first half of the year, you will run an experiment on our commercial kiwifruit orchard, investigating the effectiveness of hydrogen cyanamide (HiCane) – a very controversial chemical. This will teach you about managing plants scientifically to grow a valuable crop, and the art of balancing safety, environmental and social concerns when making a living on the land. In the second half of the year, you will investigate the profitability of dairy farming. This will give you an overview of the economics of growing any product for sale, and the range of different physical, social, technological, economic and political changes that can affect your livelihood as a farm owner. If you’ve ever wondered what shaped our world to date, then it’s time to let History cure that curiosity! Term 1 is entirely about sea kayaking culminating in a 3 day expedition which student will plan and prepare themselves. Term 2 focuses on advanced skills of bush walking during which students also reflect on what and how people learn in a local environment (the Kaimais). Term 3 students plan and run their own outdoor activities for the rest of the class and utilise the varied skills and interests of the individuals. Term 4 offers a voluntary option of the international PADI Dive course which has a significant cost. Other students will complete a bush survival unit standard. Level 3 Pathways

3+2 Pathways means three days in school (regular classes and uniform etc). The +2 is the remaining two days of the week. These will consist of two days off site/onsite doing vocational courses. These courses will be provided by tertiary providers or vocational specialists employed by Waihi College. Students are expected to attend their one day course even if the rest of the school is not having a “normal” school day (school sports, Teacher Only day etc). Time off from a course for a specific extra-curricular event will be at discretion of the course tutor. Students in the 3+2 program are assigned to a Pathways Learning Advisor. Students will become independently competent and confident with formal (okawa) and informal (opaki) language, whakatauki, tauparapara and other text types specific to te Reo Māori. Level 3 Volcanics Online Learning

Can't find a course that floats your boat? Do you want to study a subject that is not offered at Waihi College? Volcanics Online Learning gives you the opportunity to enrol in a face-to-face online course taught by a specialist subject teacher based in another North Island secondary school. You'll meet with the subject teacher, and the rest of your class, once a week in an hour long video conferencing session using Zoom. For the rest of the week, you'll work on the tasks that you have been set in time for the next lesson. If you need help, you can simply email or message your teacher, and he/she will get back to you. You'll be allocated timetabled time to work on your VLN subject. However, your one hour Zoom weekly lesson may well take place during one of your other subjects - we cannot control what time this weekly session takes place (although it will always be the same time).. You must be prepared to miss an hour of your timetabled subject in order to attend your Zoom class. The content will allow students to have fun experimenting with traditional and contemporary waiata, haka, poi and moteatea. All four Unit Standards in this course have assessment criteria of Achieved, Merit or Excellence. It is expected that the students in this course will participate in public performances of kapahaka. Students are expected to complete at least THREE of the four Unit Standards. Possible Activities include daytrips to other schools in Hauraki, Hamilton and Rotorua. HALF YEAR COURSE This would be a class for L2 or L3 students who are already taking the standard Chemistry course but who would like to extend themselves in this subject, doing an extra internal, a second and maybe third external, and potentially, but not necessarily, aiming for the Chemistry Scholarship Paper. The course would suit students considering a career requiring scientific understanding. It could run all year, or students could join it for the 2nd half of the year. Year 12 students would be able to start working on L3 standards in some cases. It would obviously be very beneficial for students aiming for high grades in the “standard” Chemistry course as there is inevitably overlap between all the standards.

A Gateway placement will involve behaving like an employee of the work placement that you attend. All Gateway placements will be on Tuesday so there will be no interruption to your normal classes. Placements can be over different time frames, from a week to a full year. To be considered for Gateway you first have to complete a work readiness programme that will prepare you for the workplace. Placements can be anything from hair and beauty, childhood education, computer technology, accounting, health science, bike maintenance… the list is endless! These include all aspects of the building and construction industry, building design, maintenance, and repairs. This programme has an emphasis on practical content and is based on the construction of a micro house building. Theory content is directly related to the practical project at each stage of construction, so the learning has real industry relevance. Upon completion of this programme, students should be ready to take on an apprenticeship, find employment, or follow previous WTA students into a higher level qualification at WINTEC Trades Academy: Building and Construction This course follows on from Construction and Infrastructure or is available for students who have completed a successful year in Building Year 12, Level 2 at Waihi College. Course Description - This course is for people who have an interest in biology, veterinary studies, farm consulting, environmental science, conservation, forestry, soil science, food science, banking, marketing, border control and many other agricultural careers when they leave university. It is an overview of the economics of agriculture, looking specifically at how to make a profit growing kiwifruit and dairy farming – our biggest horticultural and agricultural export industries. Using these examples, we learn principles that give you a basic understanding of the entire range of primary industry. Possible Activities - There are two long-term studies to complete in this course. In the first half of the year, you will run an experiment on our commercial kiwifruit orchard, investigating the effectiveness of hydrogen cyanamide (HiCane) – a very controversial chemical. This will teach you about managing plants scientifically to grow a valuable crop, and the art of balancing safety, environmental and social concerns when making a living on the land. In the second half of the year, you will investigate the profitability of dairy farming. This will give you an overview of the economics of growing any product for sale, and the range of different physical, social, technological, economic and political changes that can affect your livelihood as a farm owner. This course is an industry based course for students from Level 3 wishing to follow a pathway into tertiary/trades related careers. Students complete practical projects while also completing Level 3 Unit Standards. A total of 15 Level 3 Unit standards will be offered in 2019. Possible Activities - Students will construct more challenging projects in a more independent environment. Completed projects, theory and evidence of learning are submitted for assessment.
