About James Street School
Welcome to James Street School, nestled in the heart of Whakatane at 96 James Street where education meets cultural richness.
As a contributing state school within Bay of Plenty's educational landscape, we proudly embrace our co-educational setting that caters to approximately 238 students. Our diverse student body reflects the vibrant tapestry of New Zealand society with an appreciable representation from Māori and Pacific communities—58% Māori in particular—highlighting our dedication to inclusivity and cultural understanding.
Under the leadership of Principal Stephen Soutar, we foster a learning environment that respects both individuality and community values. Our school's ethos is built on principles such as teamwork, perseverance, integrity, curiosity, creativity, empathy, excellence in education, environmental stewardship, global citizenship, mutual understanding across cultures, social responsibility, spiritual wellbeing, strong family connections, and respect for self and others.
James Street School is not just an institution; it's a cornerstone of the Whakatane community where students from kindergarten to year 13 come together. We are committed to providing quality education that prepares our pupils for success in their personal, academic, and
