To understand society and find solutions to problems, Business Studies uses and explores accounting, economic, and commercial concepts and models. The knowledge, abilities, and values that ākonga need to successfully navigate and engage in the economic world will be developed in this subject. They will study the decision-making processes used by those who participate in the economy and examine how these processes affect sustainability.

Ākonga will discover that decision-making is required by a lack of resources and that choices are influenced by a range of cultural viewpoints and lenses. Learning and evaluation will focus on Māori, Pacific peoples, and various business models from whānau and organisational contexts.

In this course, you’ll explore your whakapapa, learn our history, and strengthen your reo, all through the powerful art of haka. Te Ao Haka blends the strength of our traditions with the energy of contemporary Māori culture, giving you a chance to express yourself while honouring our tupuna. Students at Level 1 will engage in the foundations of Te Ao Haka, learning about the key performance skills, narratives, and styles of Te Ao Haka, and their development. Learners will research the hapu and iwi tikanga and putake of these key features, perform them, describe them, and demonstrate them.

Mathematics and Statistics provides students with opportunities to develop flexible, creative, critical, strategic, and logical thinking skills. Building on the knowledge and skills developed in Years 9 and 10, this course strengthens students' mathematical understanding and confidence.

Students learn to interpret, analyse, and apply mathematical and statistical information in a variety of real-world contexts. The course develops the skills needed for further study, everyday life, and future career pathways, while also providing students with the opportunity to meet the NCEA Level 1 Numeracy co-requisite.

Courses covered will include performing and composing. Analysing music in context and using musical skills in a specific style or genre.

Level 1 Physical Education explores how hauora and movement influence our participation in physical activity. Students will learn how movement experiences can support wellbeing, confidence, and connection with others. 

They will develop an understanding of interpersonal skills and how these can be applied to promote kotahitanga within a team. Students will also develop and use strategies to improve performance in a movement context, building their ability to reflect, adapt, and participate positively.

Level 1 Science prepares students for future pathways in senior science. Students will build foundational knowledge and skills across key areas of science, including chemistry, biology, and science in local contexts. 

Learning may include exploring the relationship between micro-organisms and the environment, developing an understanding of chemical reactions in real-world contexts, and examining how features of science have contributed to the development of scientific ideas in a local context. This course supports students to think scientifically, ask questions, investigate evidence, and develop the skills needed for further study in the sciences.

The Services Academy offers a unique, hands-on experience for students who want challenge, growth, and a taste of Defence Force life. While our senior courses are in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Defence Force, our Year 11 course operates as a taster to the Services world!

Students also learn to conduct quality research, analyse data and evidence, and draw justified conclusions, while gaining hands-on experience with historical sources and geographical fieldwork.

The Sports Academy is designed for students who are passionate about sport and want to develop their skills, knowledge, and leadership both on and off the field. Students will be able to specialise in Rugby, Basketball, or Netball, while also participating in shared learning about sport science, coaching, teamwork, and leadership. The Academy combines practical training, competition opportunities, and theory-based learning to provide a well-rounded experience.

Credits will be gained through a selection of Achievement Standards and/or Unit Standards, ensuring pathways into NCEA qualifications. Depending on student interest and timetable design, this Academy may run across one or two lines. Students should still choose their other courses/subjects as normal and indicate the Sports Academy as an option on their form.

The aim of this course is to develop skills that will lead either directly into the workforce, or act as a curriculum bridge between secondary and tertiary education, in the hospitality industry. 

The course is based on Unit Standards that have been developed by Service IQ and therefore is an industry-based qualification. Standards covered will be selected from a variety of options, depending on student interest.

Mathematics and Statistics provides students with opportunities to think flexibly, creatively, critically, effectively, strategically, and logically. This course builds on the knowledge gained in NCEA Level 2.

Students who are eager to deepen their understanding or pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) are introduced to advanced techniques in algebra and calculus. 

For those who enjoy mathematics but prefer internal assessments, there's an opportunity to explore a wide range of mathematical concepts within the classroom setting. All pathways allow students to continue with mathematics in Level 3.

Courses include solo and group performance, composition, performance on a second instrument and an investigation into an aspect of New Zealand music. Credits can be internal or external or a mix of both.

In Level 2 Photography you will learn the fundamentals of digital photography through an in-depth photographic investigation. Your first major assignment will deal with the technical aspects of photography, including studio photography conventions.

For your final portfolio you will have a range of pathways for your photographic investigation, allowing for a great degree of creativity and flexibility in topics. You will take inspiration from established artist models' ideas and techniques and develop an understanding of photography conventions and how to use them to create meaning.

You will learn how to use a digital SLR camera manually and how to use studio lights to create professional photographic images. You will also learn how to use industry-standard Adobe Suite programmes, including Photoshop. Photography can utilise a range of approaches including sketching, collage, digital processes, darkroom practice, found materials, and installation work.

In Level 2 Physical Education, students will develop their understanding of how the human body relates to movement and performance.

Students will develop and apply the skills, principles, and knowledge needed to maintain and improve personal fitness while working towards the Tough Guy Tough Gal Challenge.

Students will also explore leadership and apply leadership skills through coaching a team in preparation for participation in a festival.

Students will examine risk management strategies and apply these during a challenging outdoor experience at Hillary Outdoors, dependent on student numbers.

Level 2 physics introduces students to the fundamental principles governing the physical world, from the smallest particles to the largest cosmic structures. Topics like motion, energy, forces, waves, and electricity and magnetism are explored through mathematical concepts and real-world applications. Physics helps students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills as they investigate how the world around them works. 

Through some experiments and hands-on activities, high school physics fosters an understanding of the natural laws that shape our everyday experiences and prepares students for advanced studies in science and engineering.

The Services Academy offers a unique, hands-on experience for Year 12 and 13 students who want challenge, growth, and a taste of Defence Force life. Run in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Defence Force, the programme is designed to upskill, support, and inspire up to 20 senior students each year.

A compulsory residential camp is an unforgettable opportunity to develop resilience, independence, and teamwork while putting new skills into practice.
Students also train with the Youth Development Unit (YDU) of the NZ Army, taking part in:

This course aims to develop skills and knowledge that prepare students either for direct entry into the workforce or as a pathway from secondary to tertiary education in the hospitality industry. It is primarily a research-based course, focusing on the basic characteristics and composition of nutrients and their roles in the body, in accordance with nutritional guidelines.

You will expand on knowledge gained in Level 2 Photography to generate, analyse, clarify and regenerate ideas towards the production of an NCEA Portfolio board for the external standard. This folio is larger than at Level 2 and requires a higher ability level.

You will extend your skills, learning how to use appropriate and established photography techniques to clarify your ideas.

Please note, depending on numbers this course may be offered via Kōtui Ako - the distance learning network. If this is the case, you will still have a teacher and regular face time with them, they will be a teacher from another school.

In Level 3 Physical Education, students will develop a deeper understanding of leadership principles through event planning, delivery, and evaluation as part of Leadership Through League.
Students will devise and apply strategies, skills, and knowledge to participate in a physical activity programme while working towards the Tough Guy Tough Gal Challenge.

Students will also explore ways to encourage community participation in physical activity by examining the influences that affect people’s ability to take part, and identifying strategies to overcome these barriers in order to improve overall wellbeing.

Level 3 Physics introduces students to the fundamental principles governing the physical world, from the smallest particles to the largest cosmic structures. Topics like motion, energy, forces, waves, and electricity and magnetism are explored through mathematical concepts and real-world applications.

Physics helps students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills as they investigate how the world around them works. Through experiments and hands-on activities, high school physics fosters an understanding of the natural laws that shape our everyday experiences and prepares students for advanced studies in science and engineering.

The Services Academy offers a unique, hands-on experience for Year 12 and 13 students who want challenge, growth, and a taste of Defence Force life. Run in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Defence Force, the programme is designed to upskill, support, and inspire up to 20 senior students each year.

A compulsory residential camp is an unforgettable opportunity to develop resilience, independence, and teamwork while putting new skills into practice.

Students also train with the Youth Development Unit (YDU) of the NZ Army, taking part in:
Induction at Whenuapai Airbase
Bushcraft and survival skills
Adventure challenges
Leadership and advanced leadership training (for selected students)

The Sports Academy is designed for students who are passionate about sport and want to develop their skills, knowledge, and leadership both on and off the field. Students will be able to specialise in Rugby, Basketball, or Netball, while also participating in shared learning about sport science, coaching, teamwork, and leadership. The Academy combines practical training, competition opportunities, and theory-based learning to provide a well-rounded experience.

Credits will be gained through a selection of Achievement Standards and/or Unit Standards, ensuring pathways into NCEA qualifications. Depending on student interest and timetable design, this Academy may run across one or two lines. Students should still choose their other courses/subjects as normal and indicate the Sports Academy as an option on their form.
Special features of the Academy may include opportunities to represent the kura in interschool competitions, complete fitness and performance testing, gain coaching or refereeing qualifications, and support community and junior sport events.

Standards covered will be selected from a variety of options, depending on student interest.

NCEA Te Reo students will be confident to korero Te Reo i nga wa katoa and will have had at least one year full immersion in a Te Reo Maori setting.
