This course enables students to demonstrate their knowledge of practices and strategies to prevent or address food handling issues, establish how cultural practices influence eating patterns in New Zealand and demonstrate understanding of societal influences on an individual’s food choices and well-being.

Geography, Economics and History

GEH101

Students will learn the most engaging topics from Geography, History and Business Studies to give them a vast understanding of three key social science subject areas. In Geography we will be using our local environment as a guide looking at the Ōpāwaho river and how healthy this is as a result of development in Canterbury over time. In History we will keep with this same focus and look at the river formation and creation of the area. We will also focus on traditional Māori use of the Awa and then settler use of this same resource. We then look more to issues that are currently impacting our river and people in modern times and compare this with the early settlers of the 1800’s. We will also be thinking globally and nationally as we compare and contrast with other places. In the Business Studies component, we will be looking at a financial issue and coming up with solutions for this - for example, there may be a need or want for something in our kura that we will begin a research proposal and financial proposition on. This will result in a financial decision that can be put forward and discussed. 

The aim of this Level 1 course is to ensure ākonga understand a range of skills and at the end of the year are able to be confident and coherent in the three pillars of social science that will set them up for their pathway into Level 2 and Level 3.

Hauora, Health & Wellbeing

Learning in HPE will involve participating in a range of physical activities with the main focus of “Movement is essential to our Hauora”. There will be written reflections based on practical activities. Students will also learn decision-making skills and influences on self, others and society through health topics - Drug Education and Sexuality Education.

Success in this course is required before students can take senior Science courses in Year 12.

Te Reo Māori

During this course, you will learn to further converse in Te Reo Māori in familiar social situations and cope with less familiar ones. There will be further development of sentence structures, leading to the ability to read, write, and translate passages of text. Students will attend a wananga with other schools from around our city where there will be opportunities to achieve credits. The Te Reo Māori programme at Catholic Cathedral College is under the Manawhenua o Ngāi Tūāhuriri.

The purpose of this course is to give students a sound overall knowledge and understanding of life processes, cell structure and function and genetics. The course involves studies of ecology, genetic inheritance and scientific investigations.

Business

BUS201

The content of this course will consist of a range of Business Studies, Commerce and Accountancy Achievements Standards. Students will finish this course with a comprehensive understanding of the key entrepreneurial and innovative skills that relate to running and operating a business. 

Skills and topics in this course will include: Business planning, Marketing and selling a product/service, Preparation of financial statements, Retail and Customer Service Skills, Processing financial information, Understanding the role of Human Resources in a business, Communication, teamwork and leadership skills. 

Students have the opportunity to work in groups and develop a product or service that they think would be profitable within our kura. This product needs to have a community aspect to it as well such as donating 5% of proceeds to a local charity. Students will develop and market their product to sell at an in school market day.

They will look at the differences of the alpine environment through the process of research and data collection and will produce a report on this with detailed presentation of maps and graphs. 

They will understand issues in the High Country through the study of the controversial pesticide 1080. They will also gain an understanding of global patterns through the study of earthquakes around the world, as well as the social, economic and environmental impacts of earthquakes. Ākonga will also demonstrate an understanding of cities around the world with a focus on tourism in Queenstown. Students will look at the natural landscapes of the Southern alps for our external examinations.

 Students will also engage in geographic skills such as graphing, mapping, precise sketching and perspectives which will help to develop their kete of skills and understanding.

Safety is a key factor to the course, with safety in the workplace; safe handling of tools and materials underpinning all that is taught. Students will develop skills with a wide range of power tools and fixed machinery for use on different materials.

This course will explore key concepts in the health curriculum applying these to a range of health issues including resilience and mental health, health issues specifically relating to adolescents and exploring various ways to promote health and wellbeing in schools.

Students will have a chance to direct their studies in History this year. It is important that students have a passion for study and the pursuit of information. Students will be doing independent research and reporting on significant events. Our first directed topic is about the origins of World War One, with a focus on Gallipoli and the variety of perspectives around this event. The second directed topic is about a major New Zealand event and this essay will be used in external examinations. Topics for this will be chosen by the class early in the year. Students will be encouraged to engage with a range of primary sources and to analyse the validity and reliability these sources have in relation to their research questions.

Te Reo Māori

During this course, you will further extend your language skills, allowing you to read, write and speak at an even higher level. You will expand on your ability to communicate with others predominantly in reo Māori in social contexts. The Tikanga Māori element to the course will explore oral history and traditions, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Te Ao Māori. The Te Reo Māori programme at Catholic Cathedral College is under the Manawhenua o Ngāi Tūāhuriri.

Tourism

TSM201

Students will gain a specialist understanding of this diverse and exciting sector of tourism. Students will acquire basic knowledge and skills required by the travel and tourism industry. This includes study of tourist destinations, the tourism industry and industry specific skills. There is a particular emphasis on learning about tourist destinations and tourist activities in New Zealand. Visits by local tourism operators will complement theory and there will be other field trip options. Workbooks provided by NZST (NZ school of tourism) supports this programme and students are able to work at their own pace throughout this course.

There is usually one field trip. • Students with a background in Biology can continue to further studies and employment in medicine, nursing anthropology, horticulture, veterinary science, home science, physical education, dentistry, physiotherapy, forestry, teaching and conservation.

This course is designed to consider how businesses operate in a global environment. Students will develop their understanding of business theory and will apply that theory through investigations into human resource and marketing issues. Students will work in groups to develop a product or service that can be sold and marketed to the local community. Issues of sustainability, enterprise, and globalisation are important to businesses and are examined as part of the course along with a number of other internal and external factors relevant to business success and decision making. This course relates business theory to real-world examples which show how dynamic the world of business and commerce is and how successful many New Zealand businesses are in the global marketplace.

There is a large experimental component including a self-directed Chemistry investigation. This course gives students the opportunity to investigate how multinational supermarket practices influence eating patterns in New Zealand and evaluate conflicting information around gut health relevant to well-being in New Zealand society.

Geography

GEO301

Students will gain knowledge of Temporal and Spatial variations of Coastal Process through research within the Cantyerbury region. Through this they will complete a comparative study comparing the natural processes of each beach and carrying out geographical research including data collection, analysis and evaluation. 

They will use their knowledge of coasts to develop further understanding of the issues of coastal erosion, particularly in the coromandel region of Aotearoa. 

Students will also look at the impacts of the global pattern of either malaria, urbanisation or global waste. With this they will understand the causes and consequences of each pattern. 

Ākonga will also look at the planning and management of events in Aotearoa such as Rhythm and Alps alongside the impacts these have for communities and people.

Hard Materials Technology

A thorough understanding of health and safety planning procedures, and design and construction. Students will work independently on a single project of their choice and will extend their knowledge of materials, tools machinery and construction techniques.

In this course you will learn about international and national health issues, understand various health practices to treat health issues and critically evaluate an ethical issue.

The syllabus consolidates and extends Year 12 work on algebra and calculus. It provides opportunities to develop mathematical modelling and critical thinking. This course is appropriate for students interested in continuing studying Mathematics, physical sciences or engineering.

The syllabus consolidates and extends Year 12 work on probability and statistics. It provides opportunities to develop statisical report writing skills, critical path analysis and probability concepts. The course is appropriate for students interested in biological and social sciences, medicine, and in any field where the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of statistics is important.

At Year 13, students complete a course designed on an individual basis. You will work through a program which reflects your interests in music, and builds on the topics you studied at Year 12. You need a high level of motivation, good time management skills, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Students enrolled in Performance credits will receive free lessons for their instrument. Level 3 Music will give you some of the entry requirements for ARA, MAINZ and University Music programs. The Performance program gives you the skills required to audition for Performing Arts programs. Tourism

TSM301

Students will gain an insight into this industry both in New Zealand and around the world. This course is for students with an interest in world travel or are considering working in the tourist industry sometime in the future. As an industry based subject, Travel and Tourism is ideal for those students who appreciate working at their own pace with one on one teacher guidance. Students are presented with 7 units options, of which they must complete any four to complete the course. Students can complete more than four assessments if they wish. Most students gain approximately 20 credits. This TOU301 course is open to all students but students must be willing and able to work independently. Tourism is a booming industry in New Zealand with many impacts and opportunities and is something that is fast growing.
