Rolleston College has its own 'Te Ao Māori' focussed Ako Class, which bases its learning around Te Ao Māori themes. We follow a similar curriculum to the rest of the Ako classes at Rolleston College but our focus is on tikanga Māori.

Learners can expect Kapa Haka, kōrero Māori, noho marae and tikanga māori e.g. karakia and mihi.

We expect a high standard of behaviour within this class, which includes attendance to school and uniform. Students that attend this class will also be encouraged to attend Te Reo Māori classes, although this is not compulsory.

Ākonga will be exploring Te Ao Māori through Pūrākau (legendary stories). Linking their learning to the most famous pūrākau in Aotearoa and Te Wai Pounamu, through waiata (songs), toi (art) and te reo Māori (the Māori language). There will be a large focus on te reo Māori based kemu (games), encouraging spoken reo Māori. These games will be supported with visual and written aids.

This course is for learners who need English in order to achieve other goals they might have. Unlike in English Advanced, texts used in this course will feel slightly more familiar to learners, with narratives and character tropes they have experienced before, but at a more sophisticated level. Confronting ideas and sophisticated language will remain a feature of this course, but the texts explored will have mostly recognisable shapes. Please be aware that some texts used in this course will involve mature themes. This course offers some UE reading credits and many UE writing credits, providing a pathway to University Entrance. It is mandatory to read a novel and deliver a speech to an audience in this course.

Please be aware that some texts used in this course will involve mature themes. Learners in this course will also apply literary theories to texts, such as queer theory, post-colonial theory and Freudian theory. With its many UE reading and writing credits, this course offers a clear pathway towards University Entrance and Scholarship English. In Advisory Haemata we follow the tikanga developed from Ako Haemata and encourage our learners to be leaders in the Māori and Pasifika areas of our kura. They will be encouraged to lead in mihi whakatau for our kura and Kapa Haka.

Data is everywhere, our lives are governed by numbers and we need to know the appropriate methods of thinking and analysing data to make good decisions. This course will help you build on the Statistics work you have done in Level 2. It will encourage you to question what you see in the data and critically evaluate others' reports, It will also help you develop an appreciation of variation and understanding of risks and relative risks to build on your knowledge of probability.
