Background
This Profile Report was written within 19 months of the Education Review Office and Lynfield College working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Lynfield College is in Mount Roskill, Auckland and provides education for students in Years 9 to 13. Key values underpinning learning are wairua kaha, hinengaro wawata, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga tika. These values have been developed in consultation with ākonga, whānau and the community.
Lynfield College’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- Engage students through a wide range of learning experiences and targeted, equitable learning approaches
- engage the staff through increasing capacity in and out of the classroom to support students
- engage the community so that they are proud of the students and can see their successes.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Lynfield College’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school is strengthening educationally meaningful home-school partnerships for the benefit of all students.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- to promote student engagement, belonging and active involvement in all opportunities
- parents and whanau are recognised as reciprocal learning partners within and beyond the school community
- to improve parity in valued achievement outcomes for all students.
The school expects to see:
- students experiencing flexible and adaptable teaching and learning programmes that support improved attendance and engagement
- ongoing evaluation of inclusive practices, including a specific focus on students confidently expressing their sense of belonging and building their connection to Lynfield College
- students being well-supported to be confident in their identities, languages and cultures at Lynfield College
- engaged learners and whānau who work in partnership with the school with shared understandings to ensure excellent outcomes for all students
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support it in its goal to strengthen educationally meaningful home-school partnerships for the benefit of all students.
- leaders and teachers are focused on the implementation and progress of improvement strategies
- collaborative and adaptive staff committed to all students being included and realising their academic potential
- students experience a challenging, relevant and innovative curriculum.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- reviewing and strengthening home-school connections and collaboration to enhance reciprocal learning centred partnerships with students, whānau, teachers and the Kāhui Ako
- continuing to embed successful strategies and solutions that lead to improved student attendance, engagement and sense of belonging
- refining curriculum and teaching practices that will positively impact on equitable and excellent achievement outcomes for all students.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
